#3D Studio – resolution?

I have created a 3D Studio image which a local bureau will print for me as a high resolution A4 (8 1/4" x 11 1/2") size photograph. The bureau cannot read 3D Studio files but can read a variety of file formats through Adobe Photoshop. If I take my rendered image into Photoshop, to create a file format that they can read, and set the image output resolution to 300 dots per inch, the image size changes and does not fill an A4 page size. Does anyone know what resolution I should render my 3D Studio image at to ensure that the printed image out of Adobe Photoshop, set at 300 dots per inch, will fill an A4 page? It may be easier for me to use a bureau that can read 3D Studio files! But any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi John, At what resolution did you render your image? If you want to render an image for print at 300 dpi, then just multiply 8.25" x 300 and 11.5" x 300, which means you'll need to render your 3DS file at a resolution of 2475 x 3450 pixels. However, you need not render the image at that high a resolution to get a good quality color print, you could even drop it to 100 dpi and still come out with about the same visual results.

It's very odd that your service bureau can't read TIFF or Targa files. These are standard image file formats and not really "3D Studio" files. At the very least, they should be able to read TIFF files, which have become the standard image file format in the desktop publishing field.

a couple of things I learned. Photoshop can read .tga files no problem. The dpi of the file will never be correct. Just tell the photoshop guys to print pixel-for-pixel with no scaling. Photoshop should be able to work in pixels rather than dpi.
