While we're blue skying here (Doesn't SCALA have that patented, after the last
DevCon's speeches? <grin!>), how about this:
If they do go RISC, make it PowerPC, and get Jim Drew's company to do the 680×0
emulation for it for software compatibility for older software. The chips
should be fast enough to handle it, and it'll give the Amiga the installed
software base it needs to jump to a new chipset?

I agree–PowerPC makes the most sense.
We have a PowerPC at Scala.. and while the 680×0 emulation is decent–it
is not exciting. Me? If the chips were cheap enough–give me an 040 or a
high speed 030 and a RISC CPU! 🙂

The PowerMAC's 68K emulation is dirt slow compared to stuff we have already
worked on… how dare you call it 'decent'. hehehe

emulation, or something else?

Now, Steve. The PPC "should" be fast enough? "Should?!" "SHOULD?!?!"

Just remember that an Emplant can run programs as fast as or faster than a
Mac with the same processor. Now imagine how fast one of UUI's emulators
could go on a PPC!

I guess the point I was trying to make about the chips being fast enough is
that we need an emulation that would be no slower than if you were using it on
a native 680×0 processor. Anything after that would be gravy. 🙂
Aren't we comparing apples and oranges here? One thing is to emulate a
different system that uses the same instruction set (same CPU, even).
It's very different to emulate a completely different CPU architecture
(such as the PPC – 680×0, and UUI's 680×0 – 80586 (which we haven't seen
any benchmarks on, other than Jim Drew's comment that animations will not
cut it.

Possibly.

The 586 emulation is supposed to run at 486 speed (but with a P5
instruction set). As for the software PowerMac 680×0 emulation, I've
heard that a new, much faster version is coming (or maybe that was for the
486 emulation; I don't remember which).

Hey, don't forget we're talking PC emulation here…we all know PC's don't
cut it at animations anyway. <g>
