#pc speed vs amiga 4000
9 messages in this thread
Debra,
in LW (pre-3.5) there is a setting to "Use Fewer Segments", in the
camera menu, that when selected will use up more memory but usually render
faster.
In LW (ver 3.5) the setting was changed to "Segment Memory" which
reserves how much ram to use. Leave at default if you are running out of
ram.
The Pentium is the newest CPU from Intel but the comtetitor chip from
Motorola (68060) hasn't shipped yet. The cpu in the 4000 is comparable to
a slow 486.
To multi-task is simple:
1:Start a program.
2: Click on the button at the Top Right or press "Left Amiga" "N" to
return to WorkBench.
3:Start second program.
4:Ect…
If you need to flip thru the screens either use the button at top right
(which pushes the screen to the back) or use the Left Amiga M to cycle
thru them. Or Left Amiga N to return to WB.
Btw, which do you find easier LW or 3DStudio?
Which one has a better `look'? I know that is opinion based.
When LW is ported to the PC which will you use most?
I am about to buy a Pentium 90 but I can't see myself spending almost
$3,000 on 1 piece of software. At least not yet.

ok, i've had a few more weeks using the amiga. (so my ignorance level has
dropped.) now, after reading all the kind responses, i still have a question.
what is the advantage of the amiga? (no feathers ruffled please<grin>, i just
don't have enough reference to form my own opinion) my first guess would be
hardware device interface…with video source etc. please enlighten this
unlearned fool.<smile>
Pardon me for jumping in.
Nice GUI (workbench), multitasking, cheap software (compared to MAC), file
names can be longer than 8 chars since the beginning(1984), needs less memory
(compared to Windows).
With 6 megs ram I have no problems to run a word processing software, data
base, spreadsheet software, fax program and AP at the same time. 🙂
You can switch very fast between this progs and exchange data.

You can format a diskette (or two if you have an extra floppy and still run
another program while the disk(s) are formatting. That is, you can format a
disk and continue to type or print on a word processor.
I can print drawings for my wife while using a comm program to go in to
Compuserve or an Internet provider or a local bulletin board. Try to format a
disk in DOS or Windows and still do something else. The same goes for copying.
You can load and run programs until you run memory. And a 3 Meg 7 MHz Amiga
will do all this much faster than a 16 MHz 1-wait state 80386 DX with 5 Megs.
I know, I use both.
Lawrence,
PMFJI, all the capabilities that we take for granted on the Amiga (i.e. format
floppies while printing, while doing telecommunications, etc.) is finally
available for the PC in form of OS/2 and Windows '95 (whenever it shows up).
Of course, you'll need a 100 MHz 486DX4 or Pentium and at least 32 MB of RAM
before it even works decently.

Yep. We could do it all in 512K from a single floppy at 7 Mhz 10 years ago.
I think you can only multitask like that if you do not run such terminal
proframs on workbench screen,as it can only do that running seperate tasks.
I have no problem multitasking even with a comm program running. I use JRComm
(I know it's old!) and bumped the priority as directed in the docs. I can
print from within Deluxe Paint III then click the front to back gadget, then
start another program from the workbench. I can start another program while a
disk is formatting or copying. If the comm program doesn't have a front/back
gadget, just hit LeftAmiga-N or LeftAmiga-M to swap screens around. Eventually
you'll get to Workbench where you can start another program.
i guess you have fast ram, 'cause doing anything from my 1200 from wb is so
slow,i have to use the cli, create custom startup files, run in 4 color mode to
do things fast enough.I even reassigned my clipboard , env, clipboard,t to my
hard drive to save memory for greedy programs like mui apps, and any program
that uses other programs or seperate modules for functions, making fast
multitasking a pain
