Sanford Kennedy: I will upload a project file of part of the "city" I am doing a couple of neighborhoods. I'm naming streets, etc. Like Sim City, but in 3D Studio. Bill Batchelor: … it would be kinda' interesting if a project was passed around and members contributed geometry, maps, etc. to merge into it…. Max Ehrlich: I have some office space for rent…. if any one is interested …. Sanford Kennedy: I wonder if the zoning laws will allow the construction of a Virtual Office building on Forum property? Paul Sanford: What if anyone interested took a block, or a corner of oldcity.3ds? Put up your own high-rise (238 floors), open a store (Mutants Are Us), put some people/creatures out front, vehicles, signs, etc… If people are interested in contributing, I could do the "zoning," …. StudioCity 2000. Anyone interested? Kevin Gibson: Can we do this without politicians? Say yes, please. However, If we must have a mayor, then I want to toss my hat into the ring. Food for Thought, Inc. would like to express its interest in establishing a meeting place where edibles and good company can be found. The operating name is John's Joint. Food for Thought, Inc. would also operate the Korner NewsStand where the citizens of StudioCity 2000 can find yet another news alternative. Finally, I, personally, am interested in establishing a dance studio called The Virtual Ballroom, where I would continue my work as dance instructor. Landscaping would be minimal. Just some mirrors, big windows and a few Wild Palms. Thought should be given to "green space," something I have found lacking in other virtual communities. Perhaps a rural area adjacent to StudioCity 2000 could be studied and implemented. Regarding the rural landscape: The S.O.B. Network is interested in sponsoring a roadside attraction known as "Billy Bob's Snake Farm and Cajun BBQ," where I would perform my alligator wrestling act on weekends. May I suggest that a committee be formed immediately. The StudioCity 2000 Development Committee. -=Girl there's a better life for me and you…=- P.S. Or we could just respond to the following message #: 137468 Sb: Need VR World Designers To: All Virtual World Designers Needed Enter Television, a Silicon Valley based company that is creating 3D Virtual Reality environments, needs to fill two lead artists positions. Artists must be experienced 3D Studio users, with an Art, Illustrator, or Architectural background and have a strong artistic sense. Well, I guess that rules me out. I've been told I have no sense…

The idea sound GREAT! I have tried to get this forum to do a community forum project before but there was little response. I wanted to do a Virtual forum portrait with each member contributing a 3D reprentation of himself. (This didn't need to be a realistic representation, only figuative.) The idea of a virtual city sounds like a fun idea. Maybe you could make the streets and sites. Block out the city with rectangular masses. Each member could be assigned one mass which he or she may fill with an architectural design. The new building would then replace the massed object. Andrew McClary Graphic Alchemy Productions, Inc.

Kevin, By chance I am interested in this universe we are about to inhabit. I would be happy to contribute and reflect back what i can. There are a great many quality used brains on this forum. Financing available after test drive. The things I have done are not finished, but have gathered momentul in parallel since I was first stung by a bee. I'll be uploading my office shortly. file will be NAMGUB.ZIP. That's bugman spelled backwards. My Corporate Identity will be NAMGUB INC. of Los Angeles-V, CIS, Earth. Sanford

Sanford, Arrgh! I don't have time for this BUT I can't pass it up!!! We'll contribute a neat little robot and corporate headquarters to fit a TEXAS size lot!!! Also, anybody think about how much horsepower is going to be needed to render a monumental fly thru??? With a little help from our friends we could take on the task with a few of our 'Render Jungle' machines. In other words – animators, don't cut anything due to lack of horsepower… Let's push the envelope… Matt / AM Labs

Matt, What a great guy! A fly through could be spectacular if some of the artists on this forum really let themselves go on their offices/structures and I think this kind of demo would turn Many heads at the next Siggraph. Sanford

Dear Mr. Mayor, I've got to complain about the giant cockroaches that are clogging up the city. Please tell Mr. Kennedy to knock off the mad scientist thing. Its bad for business.
#138204From: sanford kennedyNov 28, 1994 6:28 AM
Dear Mr. Mayor, Please remind Paul Sanford that cockroaches are the most economical cleam-up professionals we could find. I realize that it takes some getting used to, but the alternative would probably some tall, hairy primate. How's the weather? We have weather control…we're too lazy to have anything but good weather. Studio City 2000 needs a coffee shop. Check out my upload file NAMGUB.ZIP… a free mesh of my office and some other buildings. I am starting Bugman's Coffee Klatch where the placemats are floppy disks. Sanford free entertainment begins soon. NAMGUB should be in the Mesh Library monday.

Mr. Paul Sanford, Your complaint regarding Mr. Kennedy's cockroaches has reached my office. Quite frankly, I don't know what to do with it. It is addressed to the Mayor of StudioCity 2000, but to my knowledge there is no mayor at this time. *My activities* are presently limited to those identified with my positions as cheerleader and court jester. We seem to recall you volunteering for the office of Zoning Coordinator. Perhaps this matter is best handled by you. We suggest contacting Mr. Kennedy directly. He seems like a reasonable, although odd man. Besides, you guys share a name. You should get along fabulously. In any event, it is highly advisable that you and he convene a meeting of the StudioCity 2000 Development Committee [SC2000 DEVCOM] as soon as possible to discuss this matter as well as issues and interests raised by Messrs. Batchelor, McClary and Ehrlich. I would be glad to attend. Kevin Gibson Klowns-R-Us StudioCity 2000 !^NavFont010YOSTAMANAAUG1D0F89

Kevin, Up late working on standard cubic block as plotted by Sanford Kennedy Design, file name NAMGUB.ZIP as provided as city homesteadable in perpetuity and to all assigns and heirs a single cubic lot to build on/in which should be available in cubic multiples not to exceed a population of more than 2.5 people per lot with a .5 creature allowance for Aliens, Pets, Robots and, of course, each new owner must provide a facial DXF file of their features as a mesh signature stored in the deed bank. A set of simple plans will be uploaded as NAMGB2.ZIP in two days. It acan be merged with NAMGUB.3DS to see the plans on my desk in my office. You can leave visual replies or a model. Type is OK and the legal type is sanserif, unless someone wants to suggest a better typeface for the new planning offices and a new/used car lot I am building a lot over from Namgub Inc. I am preparing a facial mesh of me for payment of the deed along with a property description of my claim and its dinensions. Also my vacation place at the lake and the HOLLYWOOD ADVENTURE THEME PARK on the way from Namgub Inc. Regards, Sanford, acting City Planner [CThis is not an act.

Sounds like a weiner I would also like to join in Setting a scale for unit size early on might be a good Idea How bout folks start with a vacant lot and a certain sum of virtual bucks? Any one could could create a structure or space and and based on the location, asthetics, and number of square feet of rentable space they would recieve a monthly virtual rent check that they could put towards buying more lots and building more spaces. Does this sound like an unmanageable administrative nightmare? Max, PMJI Is this for _real_ ? Are you guys really going to build a virtual city? If so count me in! I'd be glad to build some buildings, cars, android etc. And if its good enough, the Yoster willing, maybe we could get it on the Cover of R5, what do you think? If this is just ether entertaiment, please excuse my virtual intrusion. <g> John

Hi John, Yes, this is real! Please see my message "StudioCity zoning ideas." I think a walk-through of the town would be quite a hit at SIGGRAPH. 🙂 Paul S. One-half of the Sanford development team.

Paul, >> Yes this is real! << Well count me in guy! <g> I've got "People" to contribute and whatever else you'd like to see built. I could do a building or a car or ? Just let me know. I'll leave it to you as "Planning Commissioner". <g> I thought about doing some "Bat like Winged Sub humans". That would be for a Gothic theme, which could also incorporate a "futurist" theme. Kinda like a Futurist Retro Gothic. <g>. Anyway I can commit to doing at least a few models and I think its a great idea! John

Hi John, Thanks for the enthusiasm! I'm starting a thread called StudioCity 2000 DEVCOM to air questions and answers about a variety of issues for this group project. Maybe you'd care to give/seek input on themes? Gothic sounds cool. Paul S.

Paul, I'll follow up on your thread StudioCity DEVCOM and input as appropriate. I have a good feeling about your project and would like to contribute in whatever capacity seems appropriate. It is my hope that you will be able to pull it all together and make it work. For my part I will contribute some models to the end result. I hope many other people will contribute and get behind it in whatever way they are able and that it will be fun for all involved. Regards, John

John It sounds cool doesn't it? I think it started as Kevin babbling but it does have some interesting potential so maybe if there is enough interest and someone ready to take the initiative it will progress beyond its current state of just an amusing thread to a bustling metropolis. ME
#138864From: Kevin C. GibsonNov 30, 1994 4:31 PM
Max, John, Andrew, Sanford, James, Paul, David and all… Max said, "I think it started as Kevin babbling ….." Thank you for the acknowledgement. But I cannot take credit for the idea. The actual name was proposed by Paul Sanford who now appears to be insulted by the thought that I am receiving credit for this. This is exactly why I didn't think arbitrarily appointing anyone as mayor was a good idea. Already miscommunication has resulted in political wrangling. And Paul Sanford has mob ties. 😮 I don't want him getting upset with me and sending in the goons. <G> I've even worked hard to stay on Sanford Kennedy's good side just so he won't sick his insects on me. Maybe I'm a better politician than I give myself credit for. 🙂 ** A little historical perspective: There were several posts, all under the name "Help with explode.axp", a totally inappropriate title, and they were not part of a thread. They were spread out all over the place. As a group, we need to learn how to reply to messages within a thread, rather than start multiple threads, in order to facillitate ease of communications. No one likes having to search unnecessarily throughout the forum for important messages while the clock ticks away a few more dollars. Already there are multiple threads with the name "StudioCity 2000." This concerns me, because if the message is not addressed to you, you will not know it is here unless you search for it. Especially if it's hidden behind a name like "Help with explode.axp." Believe it or not, there are hundreds of people who never even read the messages in Take 5. Case in point, Bugman has never been to John's Joint. 🙂 So, what I did was assemble the scattered messages into one post. I stuck it up here noting that I thought it was a good idea and I wanted to keep it alive. I gave it Paul Sanford's concoction "StudioCity 2000." It is a an appropriate title, one that I knew would catch your eyes. I thought their was merit in the collection of ideas. I cited each individual by name, giving credit where credit was due. And I threw in my two cents. I am going to repost that note as a reply to this one, even though the original is still up here, because some people don't know how to look back in time on this board. We really need to learn how to use the power that's at our fingertips! I am absolutely thrilled at the response. As you say, it does have "some interesting potential." But it has already progressed beyond "just an amusing thread." I've spent several hours, and a lot of my own money, in the last few days, consulting with individuals behind the scenes. I didn't know whether or not people would be motivated to participate, so I thought I'd try to provide some incentive. The results of my endeavors will be visible in the days to come. However, it is now clear that my efforts may not have been necessary. We have a group of well-respected, highly talented individuals chomping at the bit to be part of this venture. Please maintain your interest. It would be nice to see something so positive and constructive develop. I've been responding to messages several times a day in this forum and my CompuServe bill is fast approaching a level of intolerance. But my slow response to the last couple of posts in this thread were due to a lot of work I've been doing elsewhere. I'm waiting for an after action report from the Virtual Reality conference in New York. Recent developments there may provide us with the vehicle to navigate the worlds we are building. Has any one of you seen the navigator in Autodesk CDK Rel. 2? Has anyone thought about MicronGreen's NAVFLYER as a vehicle to navigate StudioCity 2000 in? And what about Eagle Point's product? Further my time has been spent aiding Mike White in preparing a collection of messages on SDP's SXP IPAS for upload. I am glad to see that many have found the fruits of my labor helpful. Because of my recent emergence in this forum I am now involved in doing some public relations work for SDP and a few other concerns. All non-paid volunteer work. I spent part of my morning talking with the mad scientist Mr. Kennedy and this afternoon with White. I have calls in to Paul Sanford and others. My jests here are in keeping with my forum identity, but I will gladly put the humor aside. Many of you are not aware that Sanford Kennedy and I have been posting to each other for months, and in my first post to him, I called him Bugman and in his next post he signed off Bugs-R-Us. That is where the Klowns-R-Us tag came from. I felt awkward with Sanford's suggestion that I serve as mayor. I did not want to discourage anyone from participating in "StudioCity 2000" by having it perceived as being controlled by any one individual. Especially someone who has served as forum clown. But I am quite capable of being serious. My initiation of this thread with the title "StudioCity 2000" was one of several posts I've made with the hopes of getting group activities going. I had also attempted to get a contest going soliciting creative uses of Video Post batch files. I also thought the initial group reaction to David Camp's IPAS newsletter was worth supporting. And I thought Joseph Munkeby's BONES IPAS was worth my spending a few minutes on. Point is: I'm more than tounge-in-cheek. My suggestion was and is that a committee be formed. The StudioCity 2000 Development Committee. Issues such as those being raised by Messrs. Coulter, Kennedy and Sanford regarding file size, zoning and cooperation should be addressed early on, before development is rampant. That is not going to slow Mr. Kennedy down. He has his own agenda which may dovetail nicely with the idea of developing oldcity.3ds or pcacity.3ds should we pursue that. Bugman is creating several virtual worlds as part of a long-range plan that involves his own commercial pursuits. He has expressed his interest in cooperating with a group in developing StudioCity 2000, but his Virtual Los Angeles involves his own ideas for ventures that will have a price tag attached to them in the future. If he follows through with his plans, you will be paying to ride the rides at HOLLYWOOD ADVENTURE THEME PARK. Everyone should meet at John's Joint for a healthy discussion over heaping servings of Red Beans and RIGHTS. Among the alternatives I've contemplated was asking Autodesk to open a teleconference room and let us hash this out online. But I don't think that is cost effective nor the best way of approaching the matter. But a less trafficked area than Take 5, one befitting the serious nature of our intentions might be in order. Mr. SysOp? – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – Here is my suggestion: We begin a list of questions that need to be answered. Similar to a wishlist. They shouldn't have arguments attached, rather the post should just put forth the question. JUST QUESTIONS With Line numbers. I will be posting an example today. Answers to the questions raised should be posted as responses. We need not answer every question before proceeding, but the questions should at least be asked. A "StudioCity 2000 Development Brochure" outlining "how to become involved" will result and it will be posted here and in the library. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – "StudioCity 2000"…. The following is excerpted from the posts that started this thread. It is placed here in order to clear up any misconceptions about where "StudioCity 2000" had it's origins. The earliest ideas regarding this current iteration of a virtual community are rooted in Sanford Kennedy's musings. They were found in the IPAS Usage subject area under a thread titled "Help with Explode.AXP" and were part of an exchange between he and Bill Batchelor. Paul Sanford conceived of the name. And I, the ever-present cheerleader, said "Go Team, Go Team Go": Sanford Kennedy: (#136830 S1/IPAS Usage #Help with Explode.AXP 11/18/94) I will upload a project file of part of the "city" I am doing a couple of neighborhoods. Hi Kevin, It was great talking to you on the phone again. As a matter of public record, I'd like to thank you for your efforts on and off the forum to develop a unified and democratic approach to this idea. As I said, I was not so much worried about loss of credit for my ideas as I was of the possible lack of an orderly approach to multiple project merging. I think you'd eventually make an ideal mayor, not to say you should be IN CHARGE, but just because you're really good at shaking hands and public "speaking." Heck, I bet you've even kissed some babies. I hearby nominate you to be acting threadmaster, helping us all use our CIS software more effectively, and generally keeping us together. I will be starting a thread with the title "StudioCity 2000 DEVCOM" to help us address questions that need to be answered by the "development committee" (anyone who wants to give input) to aid in a seamless merging of files, ideas, themes, looks, etc… I'm too sleepy to remember if there was anything else I should mention here. Still waiting to hear from Sanford Kennedy. As a general note to all interested people who haven't merged files: Merged entities will retain their exact x,y,z coordinates to the world system they are merged into. If everyone involved in a project like this places their entities in one spot on their personal master project file (based on the master master project), uploads it to the library… when downloaded and merged by another person into their personal master project, the new entities will be correctly placed. Thus everyone's pesonal master project starts identically, and is "built" by the creation of your own entities and/or the merging of other developers' files into your personal master file. Thus, the basis for a customizeable yet consistent project file for all. Time to get some sleep, Paul D. Sanford LEVEL 5 P.O. Box 10186 Fargo, ND 58106-0186 (701) 232-1295

Thanks for the vote of confidence Paul. I accept duties as thread guy. I'm going to paraphrase what you wrote and ask if I understand what you said. Please correct me if I'm wrong. StudioCity 2000 Central MasterFile – Merge Help – World Coordinate System – There will be a StudioCity 2000 Central MasterFile. It will employ a world coordinate system. All StudioCity 2000 developers will start with a personal master project file based on the original and employing the same coordinate system. Entities will be developed on plots identified by x,y,z coordinates which will remain a constant throughout the project. Participants will develop their plots and upload them to the library. Others will be able to download them and the entities will thus merge correctly in place. Construction and merging of the cooperative efforts proceeds in an orderly yet customizable fashion. StudioCity Central will maintain and update the MasterFile and make sure that it is available to participants as required. Did I get it right? Hi Kevin, Concerning the city master file: I can see two ways to go with this, I posted a question in DEVCOM to seek feedback. My initial vision was for a fairly low-res city, like oldcity.3ds, but customized. In this vision the master project file would be basically the street layout, with plots of land delineated and numbered. This would be downloaded by all interested developers. Once a developer is cleared to develop a tract of land, they do so, basically expanding their personal project file. When done with their tract, they save their project file, then go in and delete everything that isn't new, except for a few reference points on the map. They also double-check to make sure they've followed all organizational requirements. This smaller file is then uploaded to the library. Another person can then download this new file and merge it onto their own project file. The "master" file in the library does not change; it is just a common starting point. Each person's project file at home, in essence, becomes THE master project file as long as they download everyone else's tracts and don't manipulate anything. People can render views at their leisure, and some nice images can be uploaded to the libs for all to enjoy. It might be useful for someone to upload their "master" project file ocassionally, so new developers don't need to do countless merges to get up to date. A second vision of this city could be more involved, with a lower likliehood that everyone interested would be downloading everything, because of the increased complexity, rendering time, and CIS time involved. In this scenario, there would be the same master file in the libs as a basis for development for everyone. But there would also be a Keeper of the Project, who was responsible for downloading everything and merging it, and arranging for rendering sample views to put in the libs. This may be more of the vision you and Sanford Kennedy have been discussing, especially if this becomes some kind of highly photorealistic venture. See ya, Paul S.

Sanford, Gibson, Kennedy, Batchelor, Ehrlich, McClary, John (@ Anigrafix), Coulter, Marks, MacRae; I am going to reply to several items at once, so please bear with me. I should also mention that I have lurked long enough to take the time to go back to the beginning and follow the thread to the present – the the point being that I _am_ trying to stay on top of this and not jump in uninformed. 1) Has this evolved into a closed group with commercial interests or is it still intended to be a collaboration of people willing to contribute to a wonderful concept ? 2) If it is still open to all, are you going to stop long enough to visit politely and make the decisions needed to get underway ? Perhaps the suggested compilation of a list of concerns ? 3) Is it really necessary to change your name in the "From" field all the time ? That's another item that makes the thread tough to follow – right up there with multiple posting areas. 4) The immediate issuance of multiple lots to a single person should be carefully addressed – do you or do you not want as many different people to participate as possible ? 5) Is anyone irritated with me yet ? <G> I really am sincere in these questions. I ran a BBS long enough once to realize how incredibly difficult it is to be properly understood in the online world. I also realize that the beauty of what we do, and what we want to do, needs an outlet. The very fact that a group of people are willing to take the time to get online, to read messages, to respond, to turn around and generate models to release to the public domain, to spend money to give them away… you get the idea. You're dedicated to somthing that is as much an art as it is a science; and I believe we all can use more art, more creative freedom in our lives. So I implore the originator(s) of this concept to bring it to fruition, to share it with others and to let it be what it has the potential to be, regardless of whether it serves a personal purpose or generates recognition. Do something beautiful just because you can. And of course, I would like to formally request my lot. If possible, commercial; if not, residential is always fun work, too. Donald W. Hogan, AIA

Another lurker emerges from the ethereal vapors. Welcome to the StudioCity 2000 Development Committee. We've been saving you a seat, Mr. Hogan. It's obvious you've been paying attention… Look! Line numbers. 🙂 1) StudioCity 2000 should be a collaboration of people. 2) It is still open to all. It's been proposed that we approach development with an eye toward preventing problems before they arise by asking and answering as many questions as possible. I sense you agree. * A compilation of questions will result in the issuance of a survey. * A deadline for submitting the completed survey will be set. * A discussion of the proposed solutions will ensue. * A vote will resolve differences. * A set of guidelines will result. * They will be posted and a Development Brochure uploaded to the library. Anyone wishing to participate in the project will thus have a ready reference, which can be updated as necessary, in order to facillitate some semblance of order for the inner city. The suburbs will be wildly organic. 😮 3) What's in a name? Sorry, I couldn't resist. If the name changing has caused confusion, I apologize. If you've been lurking long enough, you'd know it's part of my chameleon-like identity. I'm a mutant in mid-morph. The name changing is part of my efforts to shake things up in the forum and to add a little levity. As I've already stated, I'm willing to put the Klown act aside so we can get down to business. But, Don, I reserve the right to wear my big red nose on occasion and if I continue to look like a schizophrenic in other areas of the forum, don't be disappointed. You'll still be able to recognize me by my tatoo… 75313,620. 4) I, also, want to encourage participation by as many people as possible. No lots have been issued yet. The confusion ensues from the fact that Sanford Kennedy is an incredibly prolific and creative person who, while between Hollywood projects, is developing his vision which can be incorporated into the StudioCity 2000 project as the group sees fit. His worlds could be accessed by entering a door or portal that is part of the StudioCity 2000 model. There is no reason why others can't do the same. 5) Yeah… right. BTW, I like the badge. Your interest in a lot is noted. I'd like to echo your sentiments, quoting less than I really want to… "… the beauty of what we do, and what we want to do, needs an outlet. " "You're dedicated to something that is as much an art as it is a science; and I believe we all can use more art, more creative freedom in our lives." "So I implore the originator(s) of this concept to bring it to fruition, to share it with others and to let it be what it has the potential to be, regardless of whether it serves a personal purpose or generates recognition. Do something beautiful just because you can." Donald W. Hogan, AIA Boy I'm glad you stopped lurking. Glad to have you aboard. Hi Don, Thanks for the feedback. I would love to see some architects come in and design some fabulous buildings! Please check out the StudioCity DEVCOM thread. Paul S.

Max, >> It sounds cool doesn't it? << That it does! Like I mentioned to Paul I'd definitely be willing to contribute some models, much more than that I doubt I'd have time for. Somebody willing to take on the Choreography and "Look" could make a lot of a variety of contributions. And I think it would be very entertaining. <g> Are you interested in creating some models as well? Or are you more interested in the storyline/theme? John

Hi Max, Please see my message "StudioCity zoning ideas" and give me some feedback. As far as an economy, whoa! That would be an administrative nightmare, wouldn't it? Are you volunteering? <g> Paul S. My ancestors are from Sanfordville, MN, not Massachusettes like other Sanford's perhaps.

Dear acting city council, My company, whose new name is as yet unanounced, would like to build our corporate headquarters in your new city. We would like preliminary specifications on a building site. Please provide the following information to our outstanding group of engineers (IOW, me): 1) The dimentions of a rectangle or square that would represent the base area of our building site (please subtract frontage necessary for roads and sidewalks). 2) The current maximum polygons and MB of textures per site. 3) Limitations, if any, on Plug-In usage which might otherwise inhibit guests from visiting our wonderful new city. Regards, — James E. Coulter —

Hi James, Please see my message "StudioCity zoning ideas" and give me some feedback. How is the Asoft photo yearbook coming? Paul S. I'm the son of a Sanford, but not a Kennedy.

>Please see my message "StudioCity zoning ideas" and give me some feedback.< Will do. > How is the Asoft photo yearbook coming?< Not too bad. I still need some more photos to fill up the first page. Look for a post on the subject in the next day or two. — James — MAP —
