Bela,
Just wondered if you or Borland had a chance to look over Amiga Pascal by
Metacomco, and what you thought of it. I've worked with a few days now, while
pulling a few more hairs out! They've got a weird (again!) way of running a
program that uses disk I/O. Took me a while to get onto it. Suppose it could be
looked at as an advantage or disadvantage. Just declaring external files in
the program heading wasn't enuf for them, even tho the program would compile
and link, it would always give me a run-time error when it hit the 'rewrite'
statement of 'Argument 2 not specified'. I thought, 'it is to specified', both
in the program heading and in a var declaration. But that's not enuf, you have
to specify it again (twice in fact) when you run the program, by providing
<file> arguments along with the program name, as in some 'C' programs. Such
as…. Program Readtext(output,Intext,Outtext); ….. var Intext : text;
Outtext : text; ……. Now when you get ready to 'run' the program, you have
to invoke it like this……Readtext Intext Diskfile1.txt Outtext Diskfile2.txt
I'd rather just type 'Readtext' and let the program ask me what diskfiles I
want to use, but OH Well. They do have an EXTEND linker option which allows
you to use UCSD syntax such as Rewrite(file,'diskfile1.txt'); but I haven't
tried it yet to see if still have to supply the arguments to running the
program. How's Borland's coming, and is it going to allow access to and use of
the library functions? So far, they say Amiga Pascal doesn't work with External
routines (so what else is new). Later, Ed
Ed, here's what I know, keeping in mind that I don't work for Borland any
more and there are some things I just can't say…
MetaComCo's Pascal is very standard (ISO Standard, I believe), with little or
no extensions. While that's very admirable and all that, it means that it's
virtually worthless as anything more than a learning language. Amiga Turbo
Pascal will be at least as extended as the IBM PC version. Unles they've
changed plans, it will provide complete access to all the system libraries.
Compiler speed is in excess of 25000 lines/minute. Apparently the Macintosh
version will be first, followed closely by the Amiga version (like a few weeks,
not months). I am expecting it in late February, but that's a complete guess,
based mostly on rumors and messages I've seen on various SIGs.
