#disk drive problems
3 messages in this thread
I'm having some difficulty with BOTH of my 3.5 disk drives. I've been getting
read/write errors intermittently, and have had to remake my workbench disk. Are
there any programs which do disk drive tests (diagnostics), online? If not do
you think it could be a case of dirty heads? I'm going to get a drive cleaning
kit, but would like to run some sort of diagnostic test, after I clean the
heads. Any help would be appreciated. (Oh, yeah, how can I make the drive spin
for the required 30 seconds to clean the heads). Thanks for your time…..

Kirk,
I know of no specific diagnostic programs available yet….but if your
drives are slowly deteriorating, I would suspect bad disks, bad connector to
the Amiga or dirty heads. #1 is solved by using quality disks after the heads
are cleaned, #2 is solved by pulling and then re-inserting the connector and
making sure the screws are tight (not too tight!). I would first clean the
heads and check the connector. I'd get a box of quality DSDD disks and if the
problems continued, take the computer to a dealer's for a thorough checkout.
As far as cleaning the heads, just popping a cleaning disk in and out a
few times is all that is necessary.

You can find a drive spinning program in the CSI Forth Sig. (Amiga DL)
I believe the turnkey version is there so you won't need Multi-Forth to
use it.
Good Luck.
