#modems and Ageis Draw
6 messages in this thread
I am in the market for a modem for my amiga. I would like to get anyone's
reccomendations regarding the brand and price I should look for. I would like
a good, basic 1200 baud modem, one that I can use for both bbs's and
compuserve. What is the best Amiga modem to purchase? I am in Boston,
Mass–anyone know where to get it here? Also, what is the consensus on Ageis
Draw?? How is the function. Is the software buggy, or does it work well. I am
considering purchasing this program–would you reccommend it? Thanks for all
the help–much appreciated!!

Mark, I have an Avatex 1200 ($80-$120) it is almost fully Hayes compatible (if
that's important to you) and there is another Avatex that is fully Hayes for a
few more bucks. I go up to Boston a few times a year and I found a great store
in Wellesley called The Memory Location, 396 Washington Street, Wellesley.
617-237-6846 I'm sure there are stores that sell Amigas in Boston, but at the
time I found this place I couldn't find any others in the city. As to Images —
there is a 50-50 split between people who prefer Deluxe Paint and Images. Both
are nice (I prefer DPaint) – with DPaint2 coming out soon – I would recommend
it over Images.

Mark,
I personally prefer 2400 baud modems and if you are a heavy user of
telecommunications, you might consider one yourself. While they do cost 2-300
dollars more, you can save that much in a relatively short period of time if
used properly. For example, CIS rates for 1200 and 2400 baud are the same, so
you could in theory get twice as much information for the same price or get the
same information for 1/2 the price as 1200 baud.
If you have your heart set on a 1200 baud modem, there are several
folks here who have used the Avantek and seem to like it quite well. Obviously
the Hayes is good as is the Novation Smart-Cat Plus (also Hayes compatible).

I have a Avatex 1200hc. Note the 'hc' stands for Hayes Compat.
I love it. Paid $138.00 for it with the cable and it works perfectly
with everything that I have tried. And I have tried ALOT! Has built
in help screens, and all Hayes registers. I think that in 1200 Baud
modems, it is A BEST BUY. AND IT HAS A 2 YES TWO YEAR WARRENTY!

Mark:
I've been happy with my SmarTEAM 103/212A modem that I purchased for
$180. I think it's now selling for about $150. I was impressed with
the response time I received when a phone line spike fried the modem
last spring. (I did have to UPS the modem to California for service
but it was replaced by the company and returned to me within 10 days)
It's fully Hayes compatible.

Thanks very much, i'll consider it!!
