What's ArticFox? Is it a good game?
#43544From: Bob LindstromDec 12, 1986 9:32 PM
A good game? Good intentioned, I guess. It's a Battlezone-like tank combat simulation in the frozen North. However, it has more strategy than the arcade action of Battlezone. There are some nice 3-D graphics routines, a good sense of strategy and a fair amount of depth. However, the graphics are all flat planes or filled-in wire frames. And the animation is FAR from smooth. I wanted to like it more than I did but I found it just too slow moving and jerky. Frankly (I'm embarrassed to say), a Firebird program for the Atari ST called (I think) Glider Pilot uses 3-D wire frame graphics and has speed that puts Arctic Fox to shame (just giving it the eyeball test, that is).

Bob, Wire frame type animation is much, much easier than solid animation even on the Amiga it takes a lot of computing power. if the firebird game is so fast on wire frame graphics, why they did not try to do a solid animation instead? Because you CAN'T beat the blitter speed (ONE MILLION PIXEL PER SECOND DRAWING RATE!!) I might sound a bit fanatic about this gane and about the Amiga BUT tell me another Micro that can do this type on REAL animation … On the other hand i have no idea if the game can be improved…and or maybe is working on a timer basis (Not a as fast as you can go code…) but anyway i would recommend this game to anybody so far i prefer this game than MarbleMadness (Ducking…) Ed Silva

Like you, Ed, I also admire the achievement of Arctic Fox from the standpoint of manipulating code on the Amiga (though, since I'm not a programmer, a lot of the impact is lost on me). I guess I just have some trouble with Arctic Fox as a game, regardless of its accomplishments internally. At the same time, I HAVE spent a lot of time with it … and been entertained. The bottom line is: There's just no pleasing some people. <grin> Best, Bob L.

I played Arctic Fox about 10 times and in my drawer it sits. However ST Starglider is exciting and gets a lot of play. I believe I saw a note somewhere that Jez San(author of Starglider) is porting it to the Amiga. A neat game.

Marc, Did you ever finish the whole game (wiithout being kill that is…) I finish it in beginners mode and in the tournament Mode (F4 for thge scenario and F4 for trhe enemy configuration) takes about one to one and a half hour(s) to do it. You must not only be acurate on your targets but you have to know what strategy will get you thru, for each mode there is only one way specially in the Tournament mode otherwise you WILL run out of missiles (wich is your best weapon) and by the time this happens AF if pretty well damage. at one instance one of the aliens jump on AF don't ask me where it came from. Ed: I think the alien that "jumps" on the AF is actually a homing unit dropped onto the tank by one of the recon flyers. Once the homing unit is attached to the tank every alien in the world seems to know you're (oops, make that your) location. Nevin

No, one can in fact see one of the little air eaters in person if one goes the proper place. The homing device is one thing; the alien looks up over your windshield. An 'Easter Egg' joke from the programmers on Arctic Fox.

Hi, I must have played AF 100 times, but I have never seen anything like an alien peering into my viewfinder. Any clue where are (is?) the right place/s to go to find this alien and at what level? jer

Sorry, Jerry, it's been so long, all I can remember is the alien only showed up for me in Tournament mode, and he was very hard to find. Someone else may have captured the beast.

I can remember one time when I had *three* little aliens looking in on me… I can't remember when I saw em either. (Maybe I ought to dust off the ol' Artic Fox and give it another whirl… I never did find the communications fort.) –>Steve Bennett

Steve, Do you remember how close you were to the alien base when they jumped onto the Fox? I mean, right next to it? Along the borders? The Comm forts have never been difficult to find They tend to the east or west of the main alien base depending on the random setup. Perhaps they aliens jump on if you run up against one of the alien structures like the radar station? Oh well, Jer

Ed: When and where (in Anarctica) does the Humanoid appear? Nevin

That Firebird game for the ST is StarGlider, written by Jez San (a member of both Amiga and ST Forums). He's working on the Amiga version, for release "soon" (1-2 months?). Watch for it. – Bela

ALL RIGHT!!!! Glad to hear Jez San (one of the pioneering Amiga heroes in my not at all humble opinion) is at work on an Amiga StarGlider. Thanks for the info, Bela. Bob L.

Alex: ArticFox is an arcade/strategy game that operates in real time. As commander of the ArticFox, your mission is to destroy an alien command post located in Antartica. The game features simulated 3D graphics, good sound effects, and blends the arcade/strategy elements well. I would recommend it if you like arcade style games and or strategy games. Tactical skill is definitely required to win as your ammo (cannon shells, missiles, and mines) is limited. Their was a lot of opinions here in the forum when it first was released and I would say it was about a 50-50 as far as customer satisfaction goes. Try to find a dealer that will let you play before you pay! Nevin
