Rumors of a new, high-end Commodore computer are peaking as Commodore readies
January announcements for add-on equipment. Commodore representatives have
also hinted at a new, IBM-compatible line that will be announced soon after the
first of the year. Large production quantities of the compatible line are not
expected until after the first quarter of 1988.
Among the equipment known to be ready for release in January are an
AT-compatible Bridgeboard, a 68020/68881 coprocessor and the A2080
highresolution monitor. The long- persistence monitor that Amiga users have
been hoping for will not be released before the fourth quarter of 1988.
The A3000 is rumored to be in the works but the planned 68030 CPU is not yet
available at a reasonable cost. The system will feature nine Mbytes of RAM; a
built-in 3 1/2-inch disk drive and 50MB hard disk; new animation and graphics
chips; a detachable 92-key keyboard similar to the A2000s and an optomechanical
mouse. A yet-to- be-designed multisynch monitor will provide matched output for
the new graphics chip.
Designers would like to get the package down to a $3,000 selling price if the
CPU chip becomes available in large, production quantities.

Hehehe…actualy, what he's describing is the Ranger…with an '030
rather than an '020. But to be honest, I do think we'll see such a machine,
but probably not in the time frame he's thinking of and the cost is probably a
bit low.

Ok, CBM's _announcements_ are not standing still. <Tapping foot, looking

Just for the record, those were not announcements from CBM. You will note
that no source is given for the statements. This has happened over and over
again during the life of the Amiga, and has contributed to much of the
frustration people express with CBM. They have _not_ announced a high res
monitor, a 68020 board, or any of the other things mentioned as coming in
January in that article.

<Rubbing hands together> Well, well… looks like my silly remarks about "not
buying a 2000 and waiting for a 3000" weren't so silly after all.

If you want one at the stated specs (9 Meg memory, 50M HD, '030, etc.)
AND the $3000 price….you might be waiting a bit.

Methinks you'd have as much luck writing a 'announcement' and having it come
true as you would waiting for whatever lurks in Moran's fevered ramblings.
Let's see … "CBM plans on introducing a 100 Mhz RISC based processor with a 1
Gigabyte memory, 20 Gigabyte hard disks, and a graphics and floating point
hardware expansion selling for just under $3000. Estimated delivery is Jan, 88"
Yeah! That's the ticket! Let's all hold them to their promise.

Cheez… must I label every such message distinctly "TONGUE IN CHEEK" with
capital letters? 8) C'mon, guys, I know Moran's history as well as the rest of
you… and I also know that no such announcements have been made by C/A.
Of course I'm still serious about trying to wait for a 3000. <Weak grin>
