One last point, copy protection and purchaser verifacation are both forms of
anti-piracy tactics. Of the two, I would rather have a mild copy protection
rather than a bureaucratic mess such as you are designing.

Ted,
How would you feel about Perry's Purchase Verification scheme if my
proposed extensions (handling everything at point of sale) were in affect. As
you buy something, at a store or mail-order, you will be asked to fill in a
registration number. Takes about 2 minutes. No hastle, right?

John, several messages have answered your first question to me. I don't see
the point of Perry's purchaser verification even if you make it point of sale.
It's a major hassle for dealers if more vendors start up their onw versions of
this and think of the problems when forms or number get messed up.
I think it was time we started look at this from another point of view. If
software was patented instead of copyright with an experation of 5 years, it
would make vast quantities of proven routines and techniques available for use
by other developers, thereby reducing their costs for product development by a
monumental quantity. It would eliminate all these absurd legal hassles and
problems with piracy etc. I can alsmost guarantee that it help to reduce the
problem of making new software available to all these new computers.
We have to stop thinking in these medieval terms of "I made it and it's mine
for life and you can only use it if you do what I say".
I'm only sorry we had to pick on Perry, who has done so much for Amiga owners.
Unfortunately, he is persuing a course which is counter-productive to all.
Hope this explains some of my concerns.

First, we kill all the lawyers…<grin> Doug.
Don't get me started on capricious law suits! <grin>
Ted
What do you propose instead of what you called a "medieval" system of property
management? You've got to recognize that people should not be forced to give
away their work. You are asking for people to give up the rights to software
after five years? Sounds like "something for nothing" for a lot of lazy and
inept people to rip off the talents of others.
How about "I made it, and you or your friends will probably steal it, so I'm
not going to publish it"? Also known as: It won't be profitable to make item
'a', and so we won't do it. Meeting adjourned. –Ben–
Is your house five years old? Mind if I borrow the master bath?
You know Ted, you've got a really bad attitude. This thread is here simply to
stimulate conversation and discussion. You contribute messages which are
tantamount to personal attacks. In short, bugger off. Besides, with even a
modicum of care, anyone with half a brain and doctoral level training in
computability can arrange for you to trace through code for centuries.
Listen everybody, this is here for discussion. Cool off.
