Thanks for your note on the Insider and C-Ltd. memory boards. Perhaps you can
clear up a confusing set of signals I've received. My dealer, who claims to be
an Amiga developer, tells me that a Starboard 2MB board will not give me 2.5MB
of memory if installed in a 512K Amiga 1000. He claime the operating system
only allows multiples such as 512K, 1MB, 2MB, 4MB, 8MB and that any extra
memory will not be loaded into the "free memory map" whatever that is, leaving
me with roughly 500K of unusable memory. A call to Commodore "sorta" confirmed
this but I'm not informed enough to interpret the explanation. The application
I'm interested in is the ability to create longer animations with Aegis
Animator and I thought 2.5MB would be better that a 1.5MB internal board which
would leave me with about 2MB. Can you shed any light on this?
George – hmmmmm. I have the starboard2 on my 1000 (otherwise 512K) and
workbench and FaccII both dutifully record the availability of approx. 2.5 MB
of memory. I have not deliberately tried to fill up the ram: disk to see just
how close I can come to this number, though. I have had no problems at all
with the larger animation demos on this system.

There is a location where you get "free" autoconfigure… and possibly he's
referring to that, in that a memory board without autoconfig will only
partially show up without a little bit of support software. having said that,
Dont' worry about it. If you buy a 2mb starboard, you'll have 2.5 mb total.
Unless you add more – then you'll _have_ more. If you're doing things that are
really memory intensive, then by all means get the biggest ram board you can
afford. –Ben–

Whoever told you that was wrong. Plain and simple. On my A1000 I had
added a 1Meg RAM expansion (Insider) and showed (and used) 1.5Meg of available
RAM. Now…the Atari ST only allows RAM to be added in those multiples…was
your friend perhaps confused?
