Ooops. One of the problems with this medium is that one is sometimes
hard-put to get the real emotion of a message. I didn't mean to imply that
your message was negative – I'm a bit hyper-sensitive about the "cast" that
certain parties are trying to assign to DDJ. (It had also been a very long
day…:-}) The point I was trying to get across wasn't really aimed at you
at all – it was the other folks. We are reader written, and most of the
submissions seem to be for MSDOS machines. We're happy to get other stuff
submitted. Sorry if I seemed to be bashing you, I really didn't intend for
you to take the message personally.
To (hopefully) make your day a little nicer, let me remind you that I am a
subscriber to DDJ, and I'm very happy with it. I'm sure I'll continue my
subscription into the future. There *is* plenty there that applies to
programming in general. (Once you remove the machine-specific code. 🙂
Sometimes, it takes a crowbar, and what's left afterwards is bloody and gooey.)
I *think* I understand how magazines work, and how the angle of a story is
chosen. Certainly some stories come directly from readers, but doesn't the
staff suggest directions for the regular authors? If an interesting new
compiler comes along, or you wake up one morning and realize you'd like an
article about AVL trees, don't you call an author who'd be good for the job?
There are a half-dozen Amiga magazines out there, do you scan those for new
ideas? As a devoted reader who's interested in many machines, many times I've
wondered why so many editors have overlooked the Amiga. Strictly from a
software viewpoint, there is so much done *right*. In my opinion, there are
some things done incorrectly, too. A discussion of either would make a good
article that could appeal to the programmer of any machine.
