#Amiga & CD Rom???

Heres the scoop Mike. The best solution I have seen so far is a 286 Bridge
(an xt with an Intel aboveboard or Sota 386 si might work also). Seems I
have heard about cards which connect up the Amiga and PC slots like a
bridge without a computer, that might work. I think Spirit Technologies is
marketing a box for A1000s and A500s that has several slots for PC cards.
Once youve got the hardware solution then you get to figure out the
encoding scheme. Most are high sierra format whatever that means. I assume
that there is documentation avaialble somewhere to figure out how to access
the data on the disks, but it would be time to drag out the old C compiler
and invent your own search engine.
Whats your application ? Would you be interested in developing a general
solution? It looks like no one else is in this yet for the Amiga. I have
given it quite a bit of thought. I have a pet application that is about to
force me to buy a 386. I am an Amiga partisan however and would dearly love
to see this area open up to Amigans. The medical picture databases (Tumors)
and the leagal stuff might be worth some money, the encyclopedia and
geographical stuff might sell also. I know my application would perform
much better on an Amiga. Do you know any more than this ? Russ
I know absolutely nothing about CD-Rom or Optical drives for any system.
I'm trying to find out info for a client who is interested in such a
device. GVP and IVS say there are "working" on Optical drive systems for
the Amiga. I did call Supra who told me that CBM has a device handler
available that can be used with the Supra SCSI controller board to access
an Optical drive. I haven't been able to confirm this with CBM, yet. I'm
hightly sceptical as of yet. I think it'll be another 1 or 2 before we see
cd-rom/optical drives on the Amiga unfortunately. But give Supra's
Technical support area a call and see what story they will tell you, just
to see if it will change.
Doesn't the Amiga support the implimentation of new file systems (in software)
and SCSI interfaces? So it seems that it could be done in software?
