#AMAXII Buggy?!

I'm having a lot of trouble trying to use AMAXII with my A2000, GVP 33MHZ
'030 with 4MB 32 bit ram, 4MB 16 bit ram, the 2MB Agnus and the extra 1MB
of chip ram, giving me a total of 10MB of ram. The programmer's debugger
window is constantly popping open, I see green screens just before the MAc
windows appear when installing AMAX, and Adobe Illustrator 3.0 goes
blahooey and the pointer turns into crap after a few minutes to 15 minutes
of attempted use.
Question: How many other AMAX II users are experiencing these type of
problems? What equipment are you using? If you've found a work around what
is it that you do?
I'm about to give up with AMAXII until they fix the bugs. I'm sure it has
something to do with the GVP '030 board, but if I disable it I won't have
the extra ram I need to make the ram disk. Plus I've been unable to get the
hard disk support to work. I have the new driver from GVP to get the
Syquest to work but I'm not getting anywhere with it. Any help would be
very appreciated.

I can't believe that you and I continue to have the same (or similar)
problems. First the LazerXpress stuff, now the AMAX-II/GVP/SyQuest problem
(if I read your message properly). "Great minds think alike"? Or "Small
minds seldom differ"? 🙂
Anyway, I have a problem with GVP Series II HC+8 (6 megs installed). I
have a friend here in the Vancouver area who has a similar problem with a
GVP Series II HC. With me, AMAX-II will work fine with the GVP, until I
connect the SyQuest. Then its game over. No AMAX-II. I wrote GVP and
ReadySoft today. Hopefully one of them will come up with a fix.
Im using the A3000 with 5 megs of ram and 2 megs of chip ram, and the 100
meg q meg quantum drive, and am haiving no problems.. I would guess it is
the GVP board as well.

I am using AmaxII with a A3000 with 2 megs of chip and 1 of fast (which I
will expand later). So far it has worked great for me and I feel it is a
real nice emulator (and I am using it under 2.0!).

I have AMAXII installed on my system, and it runs fine. I only have a
total of 8 megs of RAM (2 chip) though, that might make a difference. I
also get the green screen before the AMAXII window comes up. I have the CBM
2630 card in my system. Because I normally boot into 2.0 and AMAX doesn't
seem to be compatible with 2.0 yet I had to setup a Syquest cartridge as my
AMAX system, with a 1 meg partition that holds WB1.3.2 & AMAX programs, and
a 41 meg partition that holds the Mac stuff. Leave me Email with your exact
problems with the Syquest & Amax, and I'll see if I can help you at all.
BTW, on the Syquest, are you using the default info that fastprep comes up
with? If so, that might be some of the problem, I had to change the Hi & Lo
cyl to 2 and 1273 to format the whole cart.

I have no problems running Amax II under 2.0. On my A3000 eather.
Do you have the latest version? That might be your problem.

Maybe my problems with AMAX, are a result of the GVP 33MHZ '030 card with
4MB of 32 bit ram, and the other 4MB of 16 bit ram? I'm getting real sick
of trying to use the emulator. Actually I'm beginning to HATE it! It is a
shame because it has so much potential of being a useful tool. I'm not sure
where to turn to solve this dilemma? ReadySoft admits to me there are
problems, GVP tech support doesn't know of any problems, I don't have the
$$$$ to spend buying another accelerator card, or know of someone who would
like to trade with me for a test.

It would be a real same, im running ALOT of MAC software with the Amax II
and just LOVE it. I also have the AT Bridgeboard, with a VGA card on my
A3000, you should see the look on peoples faces when I switch from MAC to
IBM, to Amiga all on one system. It's nice being able to walk into any
software store in the area, and know that they will have SOMETHING that my
system can run. I mostly use the AT BB to run the things that are not
running on the A3000. Such as some of the more popular games, I.E.
Populous for the Amiga wont run on the A3000 under 2.0 or 1.3.2 So I use
the MS-DOS VGA version, and except for the sound, I can't tell the
difference. I also run some of the more powerfull Desktop publishing
software out for the MAC, and I love the MAC spreadsheet WINGZ. It's
GREAT! and all on one box! Kepp trying with your A-MAX it's worth it when
you get it going.

Tim, I can't figure out what is wrong with my system when using AMAXII! I
keep getting the programmer's debug window popping up in my face, when I
boot the AMAX software just before I see the MAC screen I see a completely
GREEN screen. I'm using the GVP '030 board with 4MB of 32 bit ram, an ASDG
board jumpered to be a 4MB 16 bit ram board, and I've got the GVP Series 1
SCSI controller card. I'm also using the KRONOS card to autoboot my PRIAM
108 mb ST-506 drive, the Conners CP3100 3.5 internal drive and my Syquest
cartridge drive is connected to the GVP board. When I run Adobe Illustrator
3.0 it eventually dies, the pointer turns into some squarish looking trash
and the menus all ghost over and won't drop open. The programmer's window
is a real pain in the back side. It must pop open about a dozen times prior
to Illustrator 3.0 dying. I haven't been able to get the Syquest to work
with AMAX yet, and I need to get the conners connected to the GVP
controller so I can autoboot from it. But even not using the hard drive, I
can't get away from that green screen, the programmer's window opening all
the time, or the software crashes. Now the green screen means memory
problems, but is it the GVP memory, the 16 bit memory, the 33mhz speed, or
what? Probably what huh? It is always the 'what' that plagues me th most.
Well, the Green screen must be "Normal" if such a thing can be clamined on
a system running another system. As I also get it just before the blue
"Welcome to Macintosh" logo. Or rather, just at the picture of the little
MAC asking for the disk OS. I have also seen the system running on several
other 2000's and 3000's and they all get the green screen but only for
about 1 sec. then the blue one pops up. I can only guess that it is a
combo. of several things, your system seems to be quite shall we say
expanded, with several different 3rd party hardware add-ons and while that
is not bad, perhaps in some way, 1, 2 or more of them are having a problem
with the A-MAX. I am using an A3000 with 1 meg of chip ram, 1 meg of fast
ram. The AT Bridgeboard, a VGA card, a 3 1/2 High Den. MS-DOS floppie, the
A-MAX-II with a Cutting Edge MAC compatible floppie, a supra 2400 modem, a
Citizen 200 GX printer the CBM external 3 1/2 drive, and a data switch for
the 1950's output to switch between VGA and Amiga viedo modes. All of
these things seem to have no problem running with the A-MAX II, I have used
Wingz, Excel, Lotus 123, dbase word perfect, I use Termulator (a mac PD
term program) and I have even played Megaroids (A P.D. Astroids mac game)
All of these things running in productivity mode or Hi-res mode, with the
MMU on, and eather the RAM Catch on or off depending on the application.
So, I would have to once again, think it is one or possibly more of your
devices that is the problem, have you tried your A-MAX on another system
set up somewhat like your own? Or even on just a standard A2000/3000? If
so, and it works there, then I suggest calling readysoft and seeing what
they have to say.
Can't say much about your other problems, but a green screen on AMAX
boot is completely normal – it just means you have a 68030! I have been
using AMAXII since it came out, and have had only 1 crash (my fault, I
tried to load a file into MacPaint that I KNEW was corrupt…) I am using a
Commodore 2630, a Supra 2Mb ram expansion, and a Kronos HD controller.
Needless to say, I don't have hard disk support here yet (tho I tried it on
my 2000HD at work and it runs fine.) Everything here has been real solid,
evwn when getting "slightly" enthusiastic playing with the MultiFinder.
Uhhh… by the way, what version of system (Mac) software are you using?
