tb+ and uucp spoofing

steve, an interesting development… i had uucp log into my feed site for any waiting mail/news, with the spoofing register set to spoof the uucp protocol. since there was nothing going out, it was in slave mode. the transfer went perfectly, and took about 8 minutes to transfer all 385,000 bytes of the waiting news. i'm not sure it would have worked with mail, but i'll check that also. until the problem is fully solved, i'll be setting the l.sys file to call the long distance number, with spoofing, for news late at night, and the local cisnet number for outgoing mail at 2400 bps. since mail is so small, there should be no real difference what mode is used at that point. try this…see if it works for you. —Andrew

Thanks, I'll give that a try. Do you happen to recall what the spoof register number is? Steve

steve, the spoof register is 111. set it to 30 for uucp 'g' protocol, 0 for none. —Andrew

I looked at the spoof register and it was set to 30 already….so I switched to 0 and retried it. It worked! Thanks!! Steve

Steve: if you set it to 0 wouldn't that in effect cancel the spoofing? If so, wouldn't that also slow down the transfer? Let me know, as I'm thinking about getting one of these modems specifically for the spoofing mode. -Mike Schiller In sunny Fort Lauderdale

mike, i read your message to steve…yes, the 0 in register 111 cancels spoofing of all protocols. that means that the connection is made with the telebit proprietary pep mode, which then gets overlaid with uucp g protocol. it slows down to about 1200-3000 bps, because of duplication of effort. my suggestion, which has worked for me, was to use spoofing only when dialing out to pick up news. since my (and most) site batches news after a certain hour, i call after that hour specifically for the news, with spoofing on. since the amiga has nothing to transfer, it goes into slave mode. now the spoofing works, and a 1 hr.+ feed takes less than 20 minutes. when calling out with pending outgoing mail, i don't spoof, and all works well. since mail files are small, not much time gets wasted, even though the duplication of effort is present. sorry to jump into your conversation, but i think steve misunderstood my suggestion at first. "spoof only when polling for news, with no outgoing stuff on your end". enjoy! —Andrew

Andrew: Thanks for the reply. I don't mind others jumping into threads (if I did, I'd have done it in Email). -Mike Schiller In sunny Fort Lauderdale

Yes it does cancel spoofing and slow down the trXkK^Y9, but with the current UUCP software, it's been the only way I can get a clean connection between this TB+ and the T2500 at work. If I put spoofing on, it transfers the mail, but after that the negotiation breaks down. Steve

steve, well, that wasn't quite what i meant…by setting register 111 to 0, you're telling the modem 'don't spoof'. so, the pep format gets overlaid on the uucp g protocol, and it winds up with a throughput ofabout 1200-3000 bps. this is not optimal. your feed will take a longer time to download. what i meant was to spoof when polling for news, and not spoof when sending something out. the problem comes when amiga uucp tries to act in the master mode, instead of slave. i got mail from dillon, he doesn't own a telebit. he can't really test it, then. you wouldn't know anyone who can reverse engineer the software, would you? i haven't a c compiler/debugger, nor the expertise to do it. i guess they'd need information on the g protocol, too, huh? the thing is, why does it work with unix implimentations, and not the modem? —Andrew

Right, I realize that it setting 111 to 0 says "don't spoof", but it's the only way I've been able to get my UUCP site with the T2500 receive mail cleanly. If I set it to "spoof g protocol", the connection breaks down near the end. I don't receive news, so that's not really a problem. I don't have the time at the moment to get the c source and fix this stuff myself…(I keep trying to get a couple of projects I'm working on finished). I *do* have the older version of the software, so I'm going to test things out using that and see what happens. I'll let you know. Steve

Steve, What window size do you have set for your uucp? As I recall, the Telebit is fixed at a window of three, whereas Matt's uucp wants a window of seven, or thereabouts. Evidently Matt's software can't or won't negotiate to the smaller window size, so you'll have to set it manually. There was a thread on Usenet about this a few months back (which I didn't save, naturally 🙁 ), and it seems that this was the cause of a lot of peoples difficulties. (Hmm… I hope I haven't lost track of this thread and sent this to the wrong person! Oh the embarassement!) Hope this helps [tm]. –dds

Ah….that might just be it. I'm going to have to rustle up a TB+ manual from work and look it up. (My boss let me borrow the TB+….nice guy, eh?) 🙂 Steve
