Ok… Now that my questions about 24 bit graphic cards has been settled..
Here's what I wish to do. How can I go about implementing it?
I wish to create 24 bit graphics using Imagine and either HAM-E or
Impulse's Firecracker 24. Then single step the graphics out to a Hi-8
deck. What would I need to do the convertion? What's the best way to do
transfers like that without mucho bucks? What is involved?
What's the best Hi-8?

from what I understand, you could create and save each frame in 24-bit
format, then convert them into HAM-E format, and string them into a normal
ANIM file; the file could be played back in real-time without the need for
an expensive single-frame VCR and controller.

Tell me what a Hi-8 deck takes as input; if it's S-VHS, then a HAM-E, a
DigiFEX VIP encoder would do it for you.

I _beleive_ it can accept S-VHS input. I do know that the Hi-8 standard
has a higher resolution and better sound than even S-VHS. Could someone
out there give me specifics?

Andrew,
Hi-8 takes the same Y/C input as SVHS. It uses the same "color-under"
recording technology as SVHS, although the color subcarrier is recorded at
a slightly higher frequency than on SVHS (this makes NO difference to
inputs and outputs, only to how the signal is encoded on the tape).
While this theoretically should mean that the chrominance resolution would
be higher in Hi-8 than SVHS, because more signal is being put on less tape
it is VERY prone to dropouts, and I don't think the S/N is quite as good,
either.
But as to your basic question — yes, both formats use the same input and
output signals.
