I've got a power supply sitting around that does nothing at all when turned
on.. So, going back to the original question, is it possible or worthwhile

There is a good possiblity that the problem is caused by a bad fan. If the
fan won't start, the power supply shuts down.
Is you fan running when you start it up? If not, it's worth a shot to have
a dealer take a look at it.
