I am interested in investigating some affordable ways of adding a couple of
CD-ROM readers to our Novell Network. We already own a few NEC rom readers
that we would like to use if we can. Our primary server is a Storage
Dimension FileMaster with three 650M SCSI hard disks and it supports about
30 users on a thin ethernet setting. Is there any software that would let
us share CD-ROM drives across this network? What happens to Multi-media
stuff and sound? Appreciate advice.

Micro Design currently offers the only Novell Certified CD-ROM solution on
the market. Our product, SCSI Express, allows you to connect SCSI CD-ROM
drives directly to your NetWare 386 fileserver and have them appear as
standard NetWare mountable volumes. All users on the network can access
the CD-ROMs without having any special software installed on any of the
workstations. The CD-ROMs are accessed using Novell's MAP command.
Sound recorded as audio tracks on the CD-ROM is output through the audio
jack on the CD-ROM drive, therefore this type of audio can not be used in a
network environment. Sound recorded as digitized files on the CD-ROM will
work. In regards to multimedia, we have used the National Geographic
Mammals CD-ROM with our product.

Online Computer System's OPTI-NET can be used to share your existing MSCDEX
compatible CD-ROM drives (both SCSI and proprietary bus!) over a Novell
2.X, 3.X, or NetBIOS compatible network. Maximum campatibility with CD-ROM
applications is insured through the use of both the Microsoft Extensions
and a networked CD-ROM device driver at the workstation.
