So, is it me?
I saw an edition of The Computer Program on my local PBS station recently.
There was a marketing guy from IBM on the show demonstrating OS/2 and, I've
got to tell you, it was sad.
Each task gets its own page (or screen, in AmiTalk), with one main status
page that gives you some a brief rundown of all tasks in memory. These is
NO Icon/Window/Graphic environment to work from – this will be available in
a YEAR, for an $800 upgrade fee (hehe – love it).
A viewer phoned in to ask if OS/2 has 'real' multitasking, like the Amiga.
'Well, I don't know much about the Amiga,' Mr. IBM replied, 'but, yes, it
IS true multitasking and has an MMU, which the Amiga doesn't have.' Hmmm…
isn't the MMU a hardware device, having nothing to do with the OS?
Interesting how the guy knew just enough about the Amiga to make mention of
something it hasn't got.
Of course, nearly EVERY program for the Amiga multitasks well. No extra
money for the icon-based environment. *Sigh* No MMU yet.
