OK you guys! I've been banging my head about buying a word processing pgm. As far as I can make out, there are two real contenders. Excellence and ProWrite. I'am looking for the top notch pgm. The question that I put to you is simply WHICH ONE? Any suggestions? – Danny Cahn –

Danny: I've been using excellence! since it came out, and it has never dissappointed me. Lots of bells & whistles. I'm not a mavin word-processor user though and I have never used ProWrite. MSS has always been very good with tech support on the phone (and you know, I don't think I've ever gotten a busy signal!). excellence! handles graphics very nicely, and lets you build a table of contents and index very easily. – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael

Thanx Michael, I do like a company with good tech support and I like what I've read about Excellence. The large spelling checker, the thesaus, the grammer checker. Does Excellence import all IFF graphics, and can you manipulate them and write text around them? – Danny Cahn –
#43427From: Michael GerardDec 15, 1991 12:00 AM
I haven't had any problems importing any IFF format image in to excellence!, however, I doubt I've tried many different formats… most of my graphic/DTP stuff is done in PageStream. excellence! treats a graphic as if it were a big charachter… it can be inserted at any point in a document that you can place the insertion point (cursor). Text around graphics… well sort of… if you insert the image as part of the text line, text will appear above the highest point of the graphic and on the baseline before and after where the graphic is inserted. If you want more traditional text flow around the image, then you would have to format the text to leave the space available where you will place the graphic… a bit cumbersome, but not difficult. All graphics can be sized and/or cropped… but keep in mind, this is a word processor, not an image manipulation program <g>. Because excellence! is a graphic oriented word processor, printing can be slow (because text is treated like graphic bitmaps)… one of the nice options that excellence! offers is the ability to use a printers internal fonts for speed, and still print the graphics. – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael

Michael, Thanks for the info. I understand what you're talking about. Its not really a big deal to sort of pre-format text to fit in a graphic. After all it is a WP pgm and not a DTP. Let me ask you another question if I may. Can Excellence be installed on a hard drive? And how well and fast does the spelling checker, thesaurus and grammer checker work? Can these be used as you type or only after the document is done? – Danny Cahn –
#43477From: Michael GerardDec 15, 1991 3:50 PM
Danny: Yes, excellence! installs on a hard drive. You can copy the thesaurus & dictionary can be copied to ram: for better speed, and yes, the program can check for spelling errors in real time. Obviously, performance is enhanced on an accelerated machine. – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael

Thank you Michael, You have been a big help. A lot of the other information I got from the advertisements. Right now I think I'll go for Excellence!, But Dam these decisions. – Danny Cahn –
#43622From: Michael GerardDec 16, 1991 11:30 PM
Danny: Glad to be of some help… BTW, I should also say that graphics oriented word-processors, _IMHO_, have a steeper learning curve if you are accustomed to text oriented word processors… I still find that it takes me more time to format a document in excellence!, because I don't use it enough to become familiar with everything it does. – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael
#43711From: Danny CahnDec 17, 1991 8:28 PM
Michael, Thanks again. Just one more question if you don't mind. I just thought of it. How well does Excellence import text? I assume it can import just plain ASCII? Any thing else? – Danny Cahn –
#43760From: Michael GerardDec 18, 1991 9:21 AM
Danny: You can import ascii text files, Scribble! documents and, (from the clipboard) Analyze! spreadsheets and, Online! captured text. Scribble! documents will retain style attributes, but dot commands are ignored. – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael

You might also look for Final Copy, with its outline font capability. Ron
#43710From: Danny CahnDec 17, 1991 8:28 PM
Ron, Thanks for the reply. I never heard of Final Copy. How does it compare to Excellence and ProWrite? – Danny Cahn –
#43724From: RON TROYDec 17, 1991 10:14 PM
It is much newer then Excellence!, and different then both. PW is considered to be a very good product. My first impressions of FC is that it is an amazing value (under $100) given its ability to do high quality outline font output on nearly any printer in nearly any font size one wants with minimal hassle. Ron, Ya know, I just saw an ad for Final Copy in the latest Amigaworld. It does look impressive. – Danny Cahn –

I use excellence on my Amiga at home, and Wordperfect 5.1 on the PC's (boo!) at work. Excellence is ok as a word processor, but it's graphics capability can't compare to WP. (Note: this is not the word perfect that is available for the Amiga.) As has been stated in earlier messages in this thread, excellence treats the graphic as a single big letter. If you need graphic capibility, I don't think excellence is the choice. If you want a word processor that works for processing words with a lot of font differences, excellence is one to look at. Version 2.0d of excellence! (the latest) is quite a bit faster than 1.x, and has lots of neat little features, like contents indexing, literal characters (put a copyright symbol in your text) and Postscript output. The ONLY thing it really doesn't do is let you snake text around an IFF graphic. You can have only one line of text next to an imported graphic, so essentially the image (if it's less than a page wide) has white space to one side or the other. Something that should be improved in the next edition. Graphics can be sized, however. The grammar checker/thesaurus/speller functions are quite good. It'll also handle math functions within text, do very nice headers, footers and footnotes, hyphenate automatically, and let you keep "glossaries" (style sheets) of often reused forms, a la Microsoft Word. It will work with HP printers. Postscript fonts can be created for on-screen reference. Utilities such as the speller, thesaurus can be moved into RAM for fast look-up in real time. Print merge is powerful and the print preview window is straight out of Wordperfect for MS-DOS. What's really nice is that you can print in draft to a dot matrix, or use the printer's internal font, or use a near letter quality mode with graphics, or use a complete graphics mode with all the font creation coming from excellence! (not what's aboard the printer). Gadgets let you lead out lines, do hanging indents, etc. It is Clipboard-aware, handles multiple columns, can print sideways, etc. And if you look carefully you can find it for $99. >> Ron Legro / Milwaukee via WHAP!

Ron, Wow, great. Thanks for all the info. you answered a lot of my questions. I was going to ask if you can save a default form and by your answer I guess you can save a lot of default forms. I assume that "Clipboard-aware" refers to things like cut & paste. Can you cut-out a paragraph and then undo it later? – Danny Cahn –
#43956From: Ron LegroDec 20, 1991 1:35 AM
Danny: You can reverse the last editing change with an Undo command, but only one. Clipboard-aware means that excellence! makes use of the Workbench Clipboard, so you could not only cut and paste stuff within the program (within one document or among documents in separate excellence! windows), but to and from other programs that are multitasking, e.g., your modem terminal program or a spreadsheet. >> Ron Legro / Milwaukee via WHAP!

In an earlier note I mentioned WordPerfect. I forgot to mention that it also has a thesaurus and a large and user expandable spelling checker, but alas, no graphics. – via Whap!

Danny, As a counter point to Micheal, I have had excellence! since rev 1.0. That rev was too slow to use – even I could outtype it. Rev 2.0 is somewhat faster, but still has some problems when inserting text in the middle of a large doc. I have had positively AWFUL experiences with MSS tech support. I found serious bugs in severla of their programs, instances where they decided they knew better than CBM recopmmended coding conventions, and when I brought these to their attention I got: 1st: ignored 2nd: after SEVEN phone calls, I got someone who admitted to knowing something about the products, but told me I was stupid and it was all my fault. 3rd: retalitation after I blasted them on their own BBS for lack of support and general incompetence. 4th: a solution to the major bugs in response to a second blasting on their BBS. Total time to get to the solution – 4 months (not to mention about $50 in long distance phne bills). The experience was such that I have been replacing all MSS products I had owned to that point with similar products from other manufactureres. I am seriously considering swithching to ProWrite now that the PostScript output is part of the main program. In addition they have good support here in the AmigaVendor forum. My advice is avoid MSS products at all costs, though I am happy that at least Micheal has been well served by them. wmc

"…they decided they knew better than CBM recopmmended coding conventions" Wayne: agreed. They do some weird stuff. I did qualify everything I said as being from the experience of a _casual_ user of excellence!, not a 'power user'. I'm sure that you've had quite a bit more experience with excellence! than I, and I urge Danny to take your comments to heart. – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael

MIcheal, excellence! basically works. (I have 2.00 – ) your 2.0 h is a few mini revs more current so this may not be a problem for you. WhenI try Postscript printing, I have to print the document twice to actually get it to come outon the printer. It almost acts as if the first file sent has no EOF marker sent, but they start each xmission with an EOF to clear the printer buffer, so the second request prints the first document which is sitting in the printer's memory. Other than that and some quirky updating it works O.K. And if their support was not as bad as when I sought it and my brother in Fla sought it for s different set of problems, I would not be looking for a new full featured WP. I had my fingers crossed for WP 5.x, but…. BTW, they treated my brother so bad HE GAVE AWAY HIS AMIGA AND BOUGHTA MAC! Thank you MSS! wmc
#43764From: Michael GerardDec 18, 1991 9:22 AM
Wayne… I've only output postscript files from excellence! to disk files, and they've alays worked ok… but I usually do my postscript stuff in PageStream. Your (and your brother's) horror story with MSS support is not the first I've heard… I guess I've just been lucky… they've really supported me well. And that goes back to the days when the only real application software available for the Amiga was MSS stuff. They've supported the Amiga since day one, and they're still around, supporting the Amiga. – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael

Michael, MSS has been around since the beginning with the Amiga, and so have we (New Horizons). And we are constantly updating and improving ProWrite based upon users suggestions. James Bayless New Horizons Software, Inc.

J: I certainly did NOT mean to slight New Horizons… I was only replying to a question asking for comments from people regarding products that they use. I have never owned any of New Horizons stuff, although I hear lots of positive things about them. Someday, when I can spend unlimited funds on Amiga software, I'll buy one of everything, no, TWO of everything (I'll need backups) just to support all of the Amiga vendors out there 🙂 Really! I will say that your presence here on CI$ (and MSS absence) speaks for itself. – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael
#43845From: Michael GerardDec 18, 1991 11:24 PM
J: as an addendum and FYI, here's how my purchase decisions were made with regard to Amiga word processing… Scribble!, back when I got my A1000 ('85?), because it was there <g>… then Pagesetter when it became available, for DTP work… then Laser script to make PageSetter worth having (I _HAD_ to have postscript output… and you know, I still miss some of the capabilities of Laser script, like multiple postscript pages scaled and output to a single page… that was one slick postscript layout tool for non-postscript type people like myself!) Then, MSS sent a $99 offer to scribble! users for excellence!… which took forEVER and a day to arrive (That delay cost MSS many customers). By this time, I was seeing some very impressive ads from New Horizons for ProWrite, and the descriptions of graphics capabilities made me think hard… but there was no built in postscript support. And while excellence! was slow (both in getting to me, and in its typing!), it had some wonderful features… and then, lo and behold, MSS sent an upgrade to excellence! (at no charge, and without notice) that made it a very productive tool for me. So, I guess the marketing lesson is that, I at least, tend to stick with I know how to use (the familiar), and seek out those things I 'think' I need. – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael

Danny: I've been using ProWrite for quite a while now and really like it. Although I haven't used the new version of Excellence, the old version couldn't keep up with my typing speed. ProWrite does. Roger
#43451From: Danny CahnDec 15, 1991 11:03 AM
Roger, Thank you. I recall that the very first version of ProWrite had a very annoying flicker. I assume that has been done away with in later versions? – Danny Cahn –
#43527From: Roger C. Van DuynDec 16, 1991 6:19 AM
Danny, You can set ProWrite to open in either interlace or noninterlace depending on your preferences. It's a fine program and I really like it a lot. New Horizons updates the program on a regular basis and you can get support here online in the New Horizons section on AmigaVendor. Roger

You might also want to consider WordPerfect, even if they appear to not be interested in continuing their 'adventure' in the Amiga marketplace. WordPerfect is compatible with other platform WordPerfect's with the exception of a few features in the newer versions (eg; PC V5). It tends to be a bit pricey, however, when compared with others, but they also have a large number of printer drivers (which is usually important). It also works well under AmigaDOS V2.04 though they have not updated the program for the new AmigaDOS. WordPerfect, however, is strictly text only, but has many features. – via Whap!
#43946From: Timothy P TrompeterDec 19, 1991 11:42 PM
Beware that WordPerfect on the Amiga is a far inferior product to the IBM version, even if you totally disregard the graphic capabilities. I wouldn't recommend it for anything professional, and I've used it for the last 3 years–but only 5.1 on the BB side once I happened to see side-by-side output from both programs. kerning is a nightmare, at least on my machine. But then again, I've sworn off WPCorp products for life 🙂 .. Tim Trompeter…
#44034From: Jim DuttonDec 21, 1991 4:20 AM
It really depends upon what you use WordPerfect for. I used it to develop a manual on REXX (not ARexx) and the company who used the material simply imported my WP V4 into their WP V5, did any necessary clean up, and then ran it through their DTP program for printing. While it would have been helpful if WP had upgraded the Amiga version so I could have included the extra V5 features into my document, it was still useful and beneficial. I see that WP 'tested the Amiga waters' and found them too cold to their liking, and so far have decided to not upgrade their Amiga product (even after I wrote them and asked them to, WELL!). Still, WP is a very useful product and not as clumsy as some WSYWIG'ers I have seen – but, there are pros and cons to everything, right ? One other thing about WP – it 'rolled well' into V2.04 since they were smart enough to not use special routines/functions that would croak under the new DOS. I was also able to easily reconfigure WP to use the entire overscan area which I use under V2.04, whereas many other products designed under V1.3 can't make that change or don't provide the ability to select it. It is really unfortunate that WP requires mega-buck returns before they make any investments. Their WP-Library package is really nice, though their calendar progam has one known snafu, but it is easy to deal with that. So, despite its lack of graphics capabilities, and its lack of more advanced features (it; kerning), V4 is a viable product. One just has to weigh all of the pros and cons and go on from there. – via Whap! (from Southern Illinois)

You CAN get support for WordPerfect. They're not dropping the support line. They're also going to continue to bug-fixes for the current version. They just uploaded a whole slew of new Amiga WP printer drivers to their support area on another network.
#44350From: Rodger PadgettDec 24, 1991 9:33 PM
Danny, I don't think that WordPerfect Corp. has quit supporting products they all ready have. They just indicate that they will no longer develope for the Amiga. They do profess to support all their products. Not that I'm infavor of supporting a company that doesn't support it's customers with timely and useful upgrades. When and if New Horizons writes a IBM WP importer into ProWrite, they will become the #1 (undisputed IMHO) word processor on the market. – via Whap!
