IDE's are pretty slow… do you have an ESDI time with a fast hard disk to
compare to the EISA 10 sec number?
Eventually, EISA framebuffers will make it possible to do full-color
realtime bitmap animation. Let's hope the hardware guys start producing
some amazing graphics cards next year.

I have IDE w/ hardware caching that are just as fast ESDI, BTW. On average
this is what I've found using several different setups:
3:1 MFM (orginal IBM) 170 k/sec
1:1 MFM (WD1006-MM1) 400 k/sec
1:1 ISA IDE 400-600 k/sec
1:1 ISA ESDI 400-600 k/sec
ISA SCSI-2 1600 k/sec
EISA SCSI-2 2500 k/sec
Intellegent EISA SCSI approx 4MB-25MB/sec
The last benchmark truely depends on the application. Animator Pro when
playing from disk doesn't seem to use the EISA SCSI well at all. Although
when you leave the application or save a file it can save 100MB FLC almost
instantly.

BTW, everyday just about something new happens. I almost just bought myself
a 128 MB erasable optical that uses 3-1/2" media. 128 MB in your shirt
pocket. This is shipping product not future technology. It seems the olny
way to carry my FLCs around. The only problem is that I need a similar SCSI
host adapter on the recieving end.
Those are amazing. I'm planning on buying a Sony 3.5" MO next March.
Those are 110 Mb formatted, right?

I could be mislead. I'm not at home with my files but I think they format
to 128MB. I believe that this is a case of truth in propaganda.
I've got a brochure for the Sony that says 110.

The CDROM format is 160MB, so erasable should be about 128MB. Can you tell
us what brand and how much?
The one I was thinking about was just about $2000. I swear by Micronet
products BTW. I think they swear by Sony. The nice part is the media is
about $50.

I also plan to go that route. My thinking is to get the
transportable style using the Trantor SCSI adaptor which hangs on a
parrallel port. That way you don't have to worry about the recieving end,
just carry the drive, port adapter, and driver on floppy along for the
ride. Of course if you are shipping disks only then you still have your
SCSI problems on the other end.

SCSI drives cost a premimum for performance. I doubt you would get
performance out of the parallel port, although I also have been thinking
about getting one of those parallel port SCSI adapters for when I'm on the
road. At this time I carry a spare SCSI host adapter card and am happy with
it. The bustek card installs almost automatically. It will see existing
drives and setup right behind them. Also there is no need to modify the
CMOS or install device drivers. With the parallel port SCSI adapter you
need to modify the config.sys! If you forget to but it back to way it was
then someone could be real unhappy with you!
