I am currently in the market for a transcoder, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I have heard that the Grass Valley unit is good, but I have little information on it (price? Does it have component outs,YC358,etc.). I have also heard good things about the Yamashita Engineering transcoders. Also does anyone have recommendations on Laserdisc recorders for computer animation (Sony LRV seems popular, but newer models are getting higher resolution). Any responses appreciated! Charles Brush

Charles, The Grass Valley transcoder is $1900, and of course it has component out (that's what a transcoder does). The YEM units I've seen have generally been high-res scan converters, and more bucks, although maybe I've missed something in a mere transcoder. I suggest you get the Sony LVR/LVS 5000A.
