#Prowrite problem
10 messages in this thread
I'm having a problem with ProWrite 3.2.2 on my A3000. I'm running an 040
card with ADOS 2.04. When I start ProWrite it crashes. The program runs
fine under 1.3 on the same machine (with the 68040 active). Any
suggestions?
BTW – the crash occurs right before the work page appears….

Lou,
Are you running Steve's FontCacheX? I had problems with ProWrite,
FontCacheX, and the 68040. Once I eliminated FontCacheX, it worked fine.
PW 3.2.2 works fine here on the PP&S 040/2000.

I too had this problem, and called New Horizons about it. They
suggested removing many of the specialized fonts from my FONTS: directory
(over two-thirds of my fonts were for VIDEO use anyway). That worked. I had
quite a few, but now it (oops) it's just the necessary system fonts and the
bitmaps for any fonts that I would use for ProWrite (including 2.04's
Compugraphics).

While we're on the subject of fonts and Prowrite….
I just got my upgrade to 3.2, and immediately tried the "High" quality
printing with Compugraphic fonts. Output to an HP clone (Brother,
actually). My output looked like, well, poop!
Have you tried this? I know that the problem is not with my printer,
since it turns out great output with POST. Perhaps New Horizons could
reply to this….

Jonathan,
Although I am 99.9% a Postscript user, when I got ProWrite 3.2.1 I
did try to print to my LaserJet IIP via the HP mode. It was okay, but
that's all. At least it was better than before. As I understand it, the
Compugraphic fonts in the Amiga's 2.04 system are mostly for SCREEN
representation. I am not aware that they are "downloaded" so to speak to
the printer, but don't take my word for it.
Unfortunately, the best quality from ProWrite can only be had using
a Postscript printer. But they are improving!

It was my understanding that the Fountain fonts are essentially the same
type of fonts that Gold Disk uses. Of course, while the "high" quality
mode is a terrific improvement, it does not match the output quality of
PPage using an HP laser.
From what I can see (and I am not going into kerning or anything
like that) the output appears as if it were not being scaled to full
resolution. Try outputting PPage Compugraphic fonts to an HP at 150 dpi,
and you'll see a remarkable similarity in quality.
Could it be that, due to the large installed base of 68000 driven
Amigas, that New Horizons does not output at the full resolution of the
device, but at a partial resolution (effectively)? I would imagine that
using high quality on a 68000 based machine would be pretty slow, and
possibly, slower if it were scaling fonts and outputting bitmapped pages
for 300 dpi.
Does this sound plausible? Although ProWrite is much improved with
the new version, and will remain my wordpro of choice, I still think that
New Horizons can do better, and encourage them to do so.

I would tend to agree with your assessment that ProWrite's
non-Postscript printing can be better. Heck, even their Postscript printing
can be improved by allowing the use of Adobe Type 1's like the ones
(ideally the ones) that PageStream uses. WOW, what awesome documents we
could create then! Kudos to New Horizons, though, for finally adding
Postscript as an internal function to ProWrite with 3.2.
Something seems amiss with your printouts, from the sound of it.
Let me go into normal ol' LaserJet IIP mode and try print a doc that
utilizes the Compugraphic fonts. I will post my results.

Another way to improve the postscript would be to place each character
versus each line on the page. That is the method used by PageStream and
MSDos Word Perfect.

J.R. (and to all those who may have been reading);
I called New Horizons regarding the awful look of the printed
Compugraphic fonts on my Laserjet; I asked them why it didn't look good,
and how to fix it…
Imagine my surprise when they had a fix.
As it turns out, if one makes sure that "Adjust Aspect Ratio" is
NOT selected in Page Setup, everything turns out great. The fonts look
real smooth, just like Postscript. The fonts may not have the greatest
interfont spacing, but the fonts themselves look terrific. New Horizons
is to be commended!! I am to be chastised for jumping to uninformed
conclusions.
Jonathan
Glad to hear that. I'll remember that for future reference.
