AmigaNOS v2.9g won't handle sending commands to the modem except possibly
trying the param command and sending bytes that way. I haven't played with
the slip much except for a slip-connection over the serial port to an
IBM-AT but I'd guess that you would have to dial the #, exit the term.
program and then start AmigaNOS. v2.9j which might be on here now
apparently does slip-dialing but I haven't tried it yet. Steve
No AmigaNOS version that I have seen allows the use of the PARAM command
to do anything with the serial.device other the enquire about or set the
modem (data) rate. No Amiga version, including v2.9j, provides for any
kind of "slip dialing".
I know that the base program, KA9Q, has more capabilities in the MS-DOS
world. We use it at our university for some people (and use the Clarkson
(packet) drivers (?)).
The Amiga version, however, does not allow you to share the Amiga
serial.device so there is no way you can start up any other program to
initiate a dial-up call and then bring up AmigaNOS to "take over".AmigaNOS
attaches the serial.device in "exclusive" mode. I have a local CBM
developer looking at the code, but he can't get it to compile under SAS
V6.
AmigaNOS v2.9j has no additional commands for SLIP. The source for v2.9g
HAD SLIP with it, though I don't know if the SLIP component was included
in the v2.9g compile. This addition, however, was just the raw packet
formatter, which requires the serial.device to be already initialized
(since it has no such code).
If anybody has SAS V6, and has free access to Internet, I would appreciate
it if they would contact the CBM developer from our local Amiga User Group
and see if you can help him figure out how to get AmigaNOS v2.9g (since
the source for v2.9j hasn't appeared in CIS yet) to compile correctly
under SAS V6 (he gets wierd errors that I can't even begin to explain).

The version I'm running (2.9j as it says on the title screen) opens a file
in the slip directory called nos-dial. It contains commands that are sent
to the serial port. I've seen the trace screen and its opening the file
and reading the commands. I haven't played with it enough to determine
whether the commands are actually being sent to the serial port but it
looks like its trying. If you take a look at John's kit file that he
usually uploads, you will see that he initializes a TNC by sending it "kiss
on" and "reset". I believe he's doing this with the param command. He has
a small table that's commented into his startup that shows the ascii values
to send out to the port to do this. I've actually commanded my tnc into
kiss mode by sending the ascii characters to it. This should also work for
slip-dialing. I'm not sure I understand your problem with manually dialing
a connection with a term program, exiting the program and firing up
AmigaNOS. If the term. program releases the serial port, why can't
AmigaNOS then open it? Steve

Hmmmm – I never noticed anything in the "SLIP" directory, nor a
"nos-dial", but will try experimenting with that. Thanks for the insight.
The PARAM command for non-TNC/KISS uses only allows a baud rate change –
all other "commands" get ignored. Hopefully, the "nos-dial" file will take
care of this.
As far as I know, ALL communications programs drop DTR when you quit them,
thus hanging up the connection, thus, AmigaNOS would come up with no prior
connection, and since AmigaNOS grabs the serial.device in "exclusive"
mode, ya can't bring up another program to "talk" to the modem whilst
AmigaNOS is running. This is why finding a way to get AmigaNOS to talk to
the modem is so important, but alas – it is not set up for that. Again,
maybe the "nos-dial" file trick will work? I will have to try it and see.
As a matter of fact, if you try to bring up AmigaNOS while someone else
has the serial.device, AmigaNOS just blinks and promptly quits (selfish
little booger!).

I think that most comm programs such as JR-Comm have a setting that allows
you to keep DTR high on exit. I think it should be configurable. I've
actually done it once or twice but never got AmigaNOS running. I didn't
experiment much with it. Are you sure about the param command allowing you
to set the baud rate. I set the baud rate of the serial port using the
attach command. Steve

I FINALLY got somewhere, but still no go. I tried creating a "nos-dial"
file and putting it into several SLIP subdirectories – nada. When I tried
the SLIP directory itself, THEN I got something, but still – nada (see
error message below). The "Connected OK!" message is incorrect. Something
flashes my modem, but it never performs the required dial.
Do you know what the format is for whatever is supposed to go in the
"nos-dial" file??? I have tried with "Hayes" commands, and without, with
the same result.

I think you need a 'send "atdt 453xxxx" and for waiting use the 'receive'
command. I haven't played with it much and am not sure. My Amiga is
actually several miles away at the moment as I've moved and haven't moved
the amiga yet. If you can find the AmigaNOS kit, it has John's nos-dial
file in it. I believe I had to move the nos-dial file for it to work as

You mentioned a "receive" command for 'waiting'. Waiting for what (In
regards to AmigaNOS) ?
I downloaded "the kit" from CIS, but never found a "NOS-dial" file – I
created one from scratch. Things are getting closer – I can actually get a
dial to work, but STILL need a way to send raw data.
I have a terminal server to which I connect to, but need to send it a
command to put IT into SLIP mode and have it broadcast the IP address of
the rotary port I have been assigned to. I will try again and see if I can
put the terinal server command in the NOS-dial file.
I sure wish there was a way to force AmigaNOS to abort its client
function without doing a warmstart (reboot). Testing and error recovery
would go faster and be smoother – SIGH.

The receive command is used to wait for an expected response from the modem
or whatever before continuing (I think). The kit file on here is probably
for an older version. The first version I saw the nos-dial function was
2.9j. I'm not sure what you mean by abort the client function. I'd guess
you could to a session reset. It should close down the session.

With the blind creation of the NOS-dial file, I am NOW getting
satisfactory actions from AmigaNOS after reading your note very carefully
(making sure to include quote marks and use the SEND command, which I
can't find documented). However, something still seems awry (the first
error was before I read your note and found out about SEND) with
"SETPARAMS"?:

A little more success. BTW – it is "wait" for 'pause and wait for
string>'. Now all I need are a few more things: a command to time out
(real pause) for n seconds, and the ability to "send" a carriage return
character via "send".
I have to go through a dialog with my terminal server, including an
autobaud detect sequence. Unfortunately the CLI window that displays the
dialing sequence is an output only window.
Instead of a "nos-dial" file and an output only CLI window, I would
REALLY prefer an input/output window which would let ME directly enter the
data and commands that I needed to complete whatever connection dialog is
necessary, then enter a command to terminate the modem connection window
(this is how some other MS-DOS based TCP/IP products work).

Sounds like your figuring it out. I finally moved my computer from my old
house to the new house and hope to get some time to play with it. If you
have access to the internet, I'll dig John Heaton's address out of one of
the boxes and send it to you. (I forgot, you can send him a note through
cserve mail). There's also an amiga-slip group on the internet which you
can send mail to be distributed to the other suscribers. One of them can

so – Internet access is no problem (though for me, it will be from VM).

Thanks a ton for the AmigaNOS/amiga-slip contacts. I and others from our
local Amiga User Group will be getting in contact with both. If "we" come
up with a mod to AmigaNOS that does what we need that someone else has not

I was just rereading your message and noticed a few things. The param
command does not allow you to set your baud rate. The attach command does
that. The param command allows you to send values out to a tnc to set up
the tnc's kiss parameters. Things like persisitance, duplex, txdelay and
hang-time. I'm not sure if your a ham but they would understand these
terms. The other problem with your message is you state there is no
provision for slip in AmigaNOS. I was using AmigaNOS to talk to an AT
running KA9Q (G1EMM) NOS. Do you mean there's no slip-dialing? Steve

No – I am not a "hammer", though I do understand some of the terms.
Unless I can get the "nos-dial" file trick to work, then NO – there is no
SLIP dial-out capability via an asynchronous modem.
When you used AmigaNOS to communicate with an AT using KA9Q, how did you
establish the connection?

I had the AT running G1EMM's version of KA9Q's NOS. I used a null-modem
cable. I 'attached' the slip line and then gave a ro add at.ve3sdj sl0.
Any telnet to at.ve3sdj would connect to the at over the slip line. I could
log on to either computer over the slip line. Steve
