Mitchell: >Include lower price on that list. Get real. Autodesk will certainly lower the price on 3DS – as soon as they are forced to. Take AutoCAD as an example – Autodesk has raised the price from $1,000 to $3,750 over the last ten years. The program still holds essentially a 70% market share. Evan

I agree; AutoCAD is overpriced. Even John Walker couldn't convince Autodesk to lower the price. When the Microsoft brings out a CAD program I bet AutoDesk will have to respond.

Mitchell: Maybe you're missing my point. We are in a supply and demand market. So long as no one supplies an alternative CAD product at a lower price, Autodesk can demand the price they want for AutoCAD. So far, both Apple and IBM have tried their hands at competing against AutoCAD. Both have essentially failed. Microsoft could conceivably try to bring out a CAD program, but I have real doubts that they'll have much success. I'm not being cynical – it's just that after ten years, I still haven't seen anyone compete effectively with AutoCAD. In fact, the only time I've even seen AutoCAD bloodied was recently, in the NAVFAC bid. And it took Intergraph to do the damage. Evan

Evan: And re: that same NAVFAC CAD2 bid, were you aware that a judge recently upheld the Centel (Autodesk) protest? Intergraph hasn't won yet. JH

Interesting. Do you know any details of the protest? Evan

I am not so sure underestimating Bill Gates is a good solid strategy. He can hammer and hammer till he gets it right. The idea of keeping the price high because you can is a crummy way to think about things. To narrow minded for me. Keeps the size of the market small too.
