Good morning,
I've Just added another 200MB Hard Drive to my 486-25MHz Multimedia System
and packed with it I received a copy of Stacker Software.
Since this will be my Demonstration Station is this a good idea?
Has anyone used Stacker with 3-D Studio?
Does the Hardware Lock Copy Protection have a problem with Stacker?
What about WAV files for audio?

I have stacker at home on my computer with 3D Studio, and have had no
problems with it so far. Given a choice, i would choose not to have it on
my hard drive, but I can't afford to buy another one at the moment, so
Stacker it is. I would say don't put it on unless you absolutely have to.
It is just one more thing to worry about, and one more complication to deal
with if something goes wrong…

I had a very bad experience with Stacker when my hardisk crashed during a
power black out. I wasn't able to recover any data following the crash
although once formatted the hardisk worked fine. It seems to me, IMHO, that
when it crashes, it crashes very messily. Needless to say I'll never use it
again although I paid good money for it – I'd rather just a more disks as
needed.
I would definitely agree with you, even though I had no problems with
Stacker, but that's because I took it off right after I installed it. The
stacking method scared the living daylights out of me. Having been in tech
support for the last year and half, I've seen quite a few problems with
AutoCAD and Stacker. I wouldn't use it. Look at it another way, you may be
saving in the short run, but if you crash, you have no way of recovering
your data, all that data is gone, where is the saving? I would rather get a
larger hard disk. Don't clutter your hard disk with useless stuff either.

I use stacker on my machines at home and at work. There is the potential
for a problem on a particularly nasty crash, but if you keep reasonable
backups of your system, the recovery isn't too bad. I backup my work system
to a DAT tape every week (at a minimum) so I am pretty well covered.
Stacker works with everything that I've tried. It gets blamed sometimes for
anything that goes wrong with a disk, usually by people that don't really
know what's wrong. Not to say that Stacker never causes problems, but I've
fought with service techs who tried to blame Stacker instead of finding out
what was really wrong with the drive.
I would say use it, but BACK YOUR SYSTEM UP! (you should be doing that
anyway).
