Help! I just installed the new Janus software, and I have a problem that
neither my dealer nor a nice gentleman at Commodore who talked to me for
an hour today knows how to fix. Here goes.
I have an Amiga 2500 running WB 2.04. Today, I installed Janus 1.01 (or
.1?). The installation went perfectly. However, when I got to the PC
side and attempted to use AREAD/AWRITE to transfer some files, I get the
message "Janus Handler not loaded."
I reinstalled, using the Enforcer – no luck. Then reinstalled using CPU –
still no luck. I tried moving BINDDRIVERS around in my startup sequence –
no luck.
Yesterday, under the old Janus (which I transferred intact when I
innstalled WB 2.04), everything was running fine. Today, under the new
Janus – all is, indeed, not well.
Do any of you have any ideas as to what could be wrong? If you do, you
are out-teching the CBM tech support crew – at least those who were on the
job today.
Thanks in advance for your help. I'm involved in sort of an important
job, and your help is crucial.

This may sound funny, but others have reported that reseating the board
can cure such problems. Go figger.

I don't have the new JANUS software, (yet,) but it might be that the old
AREAD/AWRITE didn't require any special driver on the PC side, but that
the new version does. You might want to double-check the docs to see if
there's anything that might need to be included in your CONFIG.SYS file,
such as a DEVICE=JANUS.SYS entry.
It does again sound like some piece of system software might be missing
from the PC side.

I'll review the problem I've had for the benefit of other readers – I just
installed the new Janus software and am now getting a message "Janus
Handler not loaded" when I tried to use AREAD/AWRITE. I called my dealer
– he couldn't figure out what was wrong. Then, I called Commodore and
spoke with a very nice technicial support person for about an hour who
walked me through various steps – all to no avail.
However, one thing I didn't mention was that just before my upgrade came,
the files on my c: directory were deleated by accident. After booting
from A:, I restored my config.sys and autoexec.bat files as best I could,
but I might have missed something. Could someone using this configuation
(Janus2.1 with an A2286) list these files for me?
Or if the problem isn't there, any other advice would be real helpful.
I'm running some of my crucial hardware on my PC side and really neec to
get to it. Thanks a lot – I'd be real grateful if someone could help me

I'm running a XT BB on a stock 2000 with 2.04 and Janus 2.1. I have
no problem at all with aread/awrite. I would make sure that your PCPrefs
point to D000. Also, there should be no need to manually load in PCDisk
any longer, so make sure you've taken out those references in your
startup. Other than that, can't think of why you'd be having any
problems. FYI, I'm including a copy of my config.sys. Note that I'm
running MS-DOS 5.0 on my system.

Thanks, John….I'll try that. But, yes, the PCPrefs IS set to D000 and
I've taken out the offending references in my startup sequence. A clue
just may be in your config.sys. I'm only running DOS 3.3, but I have DOS
5 ready to install. (I'm in the process of upgrading the whole works.)
