#Help with second SCSI in

All, Does anyone have two SCSI interfaces in their Amiga? I don't know if it'll work but I'm trying to connect a Seagate ST-138N 30Mb drive to the A2091 controller card that came with my 2000HD. I also have a GForce 030 with a Quantum 52Mb drive connected. Is there a way to have both of these cards work at the same time. In 030 mode the Gforce board works. When I select boot 68000 only the 2091 works. Can anyone give me some insight? Some important info: 2091 GForce Autoboot jumper disabled autoboot enabled jumpe 5 option 2 enabled SCSI address 0 SCSI address 6 Peter6 Live from New York on Autopilot

Peter; I have had as many as four SCSI interfaces connected to the same Ami. However, I did not experience the problems that you describe. The cards just worked and the original boot controller booted under all conditions. I don't recall that I ever tried to boot the 68000 however. I believe that this had been done on a machine with the GVP-3001 (their first 030 card). -bill

Peter, We had a G-Force for a while, and before it TOTALLY aggravated us into sending it back, we ran into exactly what you are running into now. We were never able to resolve that problem with help from the dealer, GVP and CBM. We're now using an RSC '040 and two 2091's, and it works flawlessly. –Ben …via AutoPilot

I may be mistaken here, but I believe booting in 68000 mode turns off the GVP card – I know the memory goes, and I wouldn't be surprised if the HD is inaccessible as well because of this. I think the onboard SCSI feeds directly into the 32-bit memory, and if that isn't available it might not be able to feed into 16-bit RAM. Again, I may be wrong about this – I recommend calling GVP asd asking them. Harry

Harry, My problem is that when booted regularly in 68030 mode the computer only boots the HD connected to the GVP card. When booted in 68000 mode the computer then boots the device connected to the 2091. How do I utilize both devices under 030 mode. I know the GVP card is disabled under 68000 mode and that doesn't bother me. Peter6 Live from New York on Autopilot

Peter – OK, I misunderstood the flip-flop of which drive booted when. The only thing I can think of now is, perhaps the drive on the 2091 spins up slower than the one on the GVP. If it does, and its SCSI ID is higher than that of the GVP drive, the system won't recognize it because it's not 'ready'. If this is your situation, try setting the SCSI ID on the slow drive lower than the other one and see. You _may_ have to modify your partitioning – I don't know if the boot partition has to be on the lower ID or not. The other bit of voodoo that might apply is termination – I've been fooling with SCSI drives since 1985 and I still get confused about that 8^). Maybe someone who knows can help there. Harry

Peter, I can't really help, but I have been using two SCSI controllers in my A2000 for several years now without any problems between the two boards that I can tell. Each bus is separate and only the device names I think would make a difference, SCSI ID numbers do not matter. I was wondering if in 68000 mode, does the G-force 030 turn off its SCSI controller too? Chris

OK, I see what you're doing. The SCSI controller on the GVP is 32-bit, exclusive to the 030… I afraid the problem is the 2091. If you don't have the 2091A, it won't allow 2 SCSI controllers in the same machine – at least that is the problem I ran into on a 2000HD a while back. I'd suggest putting your Seagate at a different ID and adding it to the existing SCSI through another cable… After all, that's what SCSI does – up to 8 devices (the controller being one of them) on the same 'bus' (cable).
