CONCLUSION: The PCMCIA Memory is a definite liability –and MBX 1200
FastRAM is a clear advantage. Note: my company makes MBX 1200 [MicroBotics]
–I feel that the PCMCIA issue is of general enough interest to warrant

Fly over to London…. I went shopping at Harrods yesterday and almost
tripped over a ten high stack of 1200's in the 'Electric Dreams'
department ! No HD models though…

I won't be going to London again until next fall… hopefully by then
CBM/US will have their act together, at least as regards shipping 1200's,

Apparently, in the UK, the games market is currently hoovering up all the
spare 1200s as a sort of super-console. Maybe when things settle down a
little, the HD models will start appearing. Certainly the box comes with a
range of HD sizes and tickboxes. Sadly, the 0MB HD box was ticked on mine.

A friend of mine has his dog trained so that if anything falls from the
table (he has 3 kids, things do that quite often) he yells "HOOVER!" and
Punhc, a golden retriever, will come a-running and suck up the offending
detrius. I always thought it was very cute. :^)

funnily enough, my dealer just rang and offered me an A1200 with a hard
drive. Trouble is I'm not sure what I would do with one. Would it fit
inside my tower ? :^)

That's one thing I've never been able to figure out about CBM is why they
always seem to start shipping new stuff AFTER Xmas. Didn't they also do
this with CDTV?

Do you have a projected price on them WITH a 2.5" IDE Hard drive?
Not the 40MB drive that is reputed to be the one for the A1200HD, but a
bigger one in the 100MB range is possible….

$300 difference for 40 MB of space? What's up? I can get Maxtor 212MB
IDE HD's for about $400! how can a jump from 80Mb to 120MB be so much?

These are 2.5" drives….a bit more expensive then the very common 3.5"
form factor drives.

And how! But I know of a source to Maxtor 2.5" 80 MB drives at $215 a
shot. I was looking to buying a 1200 and doing a DIY HD upgrade. But this
looks to be more than a bit cheaper…..

If you've got the skills to do it….go for it
At least you can get the 1200 without a HD….something not avalible with
most other Amigas.

They are 2.5" drives, yes it is an INSANE jump but thats what the
industry's charging for the convienience of 2.5" as opposed to 3.5".

Bob: if you are an owner of MicroBotics peripherals and/or a registered
developer or Amiga editorial person, we have a user sale program. I know
that a number of the larger mail order outfits will be carrying them at
decent prices. You might try (for example) AMIGAMAN/computer basics.
Right now, we are shipping these puppies as fast as we can make em. The
Amiga 1200 is *taking off* bigtime. (thank goodness!) –Redmond
Nope, I don't have any microbotics stuff yet, nor am I a developer, as to
an editorial person, I spout of about the Amiga all the time ;D but I
don't think that counts!
Acutally I had a VXL on order, but the place I ordered it from had back
order problems with another part (for 2 months!) Then the 1200 came out,
so I cancelled the order…
I'll give a couple of MO companies a call next…

Could you (or somebody) do an AIBB on the 1200 with and without MBX
normalized against the 2000 with A2620? I have 1 meg chip, 2 megs on 2620
and 4 megs 16 bit ram, if it makes that much difference.
Can't afford a 4000, been looking real hard at '030 board, but just might
switch if there's some speedup involved with the 1200. I'm in a tough
spot for rationalizing a new machine, doncha see .. <grin>
Ex-IBMer at work is looking hard at 1200. He'll be interested too.

I won't be able to get to that before the holidays, Don: the AIBB I'm using
no longer includes the 020 figures so I'd have to make a new module using a
2620. I do have figures normalized against a chipram A500 (which you could
then use to interpolate your 020 speed). Would that help? –Regards,

Yes, that would do very well. Don't spend a lot of time on my account.
I've been telling this prospective 1200 lust-afterer that it should run
significantly faster than my machine. I just don't know how much.

Don, even if there is no speed improvement in the A1200 CPU, the graphics
will be much faster.. and that counts as much as the CPU where the Amiga
is concerned.
