#Dual Standard FAX HELP!

I just upgraded to a USR Dual Standard with FAX. USR does not provide any
FAX software for the Amiga.
I have downloaded AmigaFax v1.34 from the library here but I cannot get it
to work with my modem. It appears to only support Class 2 FAX modems and
the USR is a Class 1 Fax modem.
Has anyone here use a USR Dual Standard to FAX anything? If so, what
software were you using?
What is the difference between Class2 and Class 1 FAX protocols?
Any help would be appreciated!

Jeff,
The difference between Class 1 and Class 2 is where the "work" is
done in the fax send/receive. Class 1 does it in software in the computer,
class 2 does it in the modem itself.
Class 2 was not official until a couple of months ago, prior to
that it was being revised (several times) so most modem manufacturers
didn't try to build to it…since it was a moving target.
Now that it's ratified, I believe that most modem manufacturers
will upgrade the ROMs in their modems to allow Class 2.

I also have a Class 1 FAX-modem and the only way I have found to use the
FAX capabilities with my Amiga is to run MAC s/w under AMAXII+. I haven't
tried PC s/w on the BridgeBoard yet.

I've been told (by someone connected to GPSoftware) that GPFax will
work with the USR Dual Standard/Fax. I haven't been able to experiment
with it yet, but it might be worth looking into. This would be the
"generic" version of GPFax, not the Supra-specific version that usually
comes with the Supra faxmodems.

Sorry for buttin' in here, but it's along these lines…
I have an old FastFAX from the ill-fated Michtron, remember? Well, their
software acyually works quite well under WB 2.1, even though it was
written on 1.2 or 1.3. anyway, there is NO support for the fax, a
stand-alone box much like a modem. I was wondering if anyone here knew 1)
what this box has in it, and 2) where I can get support in terms of
software that might work with it.
I'd like to try the GPFax s/w, but I haven't really had time to look for
it…
I've been using a PC for the fax stuff, but I'd prefer to set up the Amiga
for BBS, fax, etc. rather than having 3-5 PC's do the job…
So where can I pick-up or order the "generic" GPFax? Or who can I call
for more info?

GPSoft itself is in Australia, so it's not easy to reach them. I was
able to leave mail for one person via Internet – Richard Carde, at
internet address rc@splat.aarnet.edu.au. He's in the update docs as the
person to contact about getting front-ends to work (don't ask me what they
are, I don't know 8^) ). Supposedly Greg Perry (the author) can be reached
at gregp@gpsoft.adsp.sub.org, but I think that's a UUCP mail address
rather than Internet (I couldn't Internet to that address).
I did experiment last night and discovered that GPFax didn't recognize
something about that modem. The init string was sent OK, and according to
the modem LEDs all the proper signals were there, but the software came up
and said "where's the modem?". I'm going to try to leave another message
about this (I have the "generic" version even though I bought it from
Supra direct) but I may end up having to try some other fax software.

When I get "where's the modem?" I have found that;
(1) I did not have my modem connected to the serial port
or the modem was not powered on.
(2) something else was using the serial port at that time.
Usually it's #2 and I still have Baud Bandit running.

Thanks for the ideas, but I eliminated those two in the first two
seconds 8^). I'm still trying to EMail that one internet address I have
but now that seems to not want to go through either. Oh, well.
