Gary– Is there any way to create a "depth map" as a rendered output? Possibly a red-scale map where the higher values (of red) represent objects that are closer to the camera, and lower (darker) values show objects farther back. This information can be processed and converted into a random-dot stereogram. I want to do an animation and covnvert it. Should be interesting to see how well the eyes can track moving objects while diverged– The full 3-d effect without glasses or any other viewing hardware! –John Wilson AT&I

John: Why not just put red fog to your scene, and set the ranges of your camera to 0% at the close point and 100% at the far point? Should give you a pretty good red depth map. Greg Pyros

Didn't work, though you were on the right track. Ended up using red material, red ambient light and distance cueing… After all this, I find that the conversion software only supports 14 shades of red, so it only picked up the parts of the picture that matched exactly!
