#Primera Problems

A friend of mine just recently purchased the Primera printer for use with her
A3000. She hooked it up to the parallel port, installed the printer driver
using the supplied software, and then then tried to print. Nothing. The
printer shows no sign of life. I had her copy a text file to both prt: and
par:, but nothing happened. Interestingly, when I try that at home on my 4000
with no printer attached, the copy to the par: hangs the shell, and when I try
copying to prt: after that it says the device is busy. She's getting neither
error, which makes me think that the Amiga is happily outputting something to
the par which is not being recognized by the Primera. Is there something else
she has to do to enable the printer for the amiga? (The manual for the amiga is
apparently comprised of a readme). My experience with printers is that when I
reboot the machine, the printer reacts somehow. Not so with the Primera. Any
ideas out there?

Actually, if you unplug the Primera from the 3000's par port and send data
to it, she too will see the message 'printer trouble, resume/cancel'.
Have you put another printer on the par port to see if it works? If it
does, then you've got a problem with the Primera… if it doesn't, you've
got a problem with her 3000.

There are two files that need to be copied from the disk that came with the
printer.
The first is the Printer driver that goes in the Sys:Dev/printers drawer. The
second is named something like Primera.kgs and goes into the Sys:wbstartup
drawer.
Finally you need to go to sys:prefs and select the Primera printer driver. In
the Graphics selection you need to make sure you use 1 for the right slider (I
can't remember what it is – density or something- sinc since I am at my work
computer. All of this is of course outlined in the readme file and
instructions that came with the printer.
If your friend has done all of this let me know and there might be something
else wrong like too long a parallel cable.

Assuming you have selected the appropriate settings for the Primera in
Printer Preferences and Printer Graphics, if you are seeing no reaction
out of the printer, it probably means you are using too long a parallel
cable or you have a switch box between the Primera and the parallel port
of your Amiga. The Priimera is very very sensitive to long cable lengths
and simply won't work. I found that the Primera would not work when I had
a parallel switch box between the printer and the Amiga. Removing the
switch box and connecting the Amiga's parallel port directly to the
Primera using a four foot Parallel cable brought everything to life.
