Dear Mr. Tech,
Please help.
I am having trouble getting my PhonePak to transmit FAX files. I have an
A3000 with SupraRAM 2000 and internal hard disk. ListVer produces:

All other PPak functions seem to work properly. I have a very short fax
message which was imported from an ASCII file created in MEMACS. The fax
file looks ok (to me anyway). I have the FAX number stored in a database.
I select the FAX file to transmit, then double click the dial button for
the FAX number. Prefix and suffix are set to Std and Fax, respectively,
and are the operators preset by GVP. The PPak dials the number, gets the
connect and goes into Xmit, but never returns. The PPak screen no longer
responds to mouse or keyboard, and will not release the line until I
reboot. A similar result occurs if I dial the number manually and use the
Send button on the VFX Control panel.
The PPak Monitor program shows that a FAX signal is detected, but after a
while shows a remote hangup followed by several more remote hangups. The
PPak holds the line open throughout.
I can provide more info if necessary, but I figure this might be enough if
we're dealing with a known bug.

Does the SupraRAM have some Zorro-II memory on it? The PhonePak will
appear to work on an A3000 machine but will not unless there is either at
least 512K bytes of Zorro-II memory or the new buster chip for the A3000
that will correct a Zorro-III DMA problem.

The only reason I purchased the SupraRAM was because my salesman told
me that the PhonePak required 16bit A2000 memory to operate. It is
populated with 2Mb of memory which I had assumed was of the
appropriate type. I had the Phone Pak installed as part of the
original A3000 puchase (Creative Computers, CA). I will verify with
them that Zorro-II memory was used. The computer was purchased new
within the last 7 weeks, if that is important. Assuming that they
have provided me with a good config, is there anything else you can
think of that might be wrong? The Voice-mail portion of the program
seems to work fine; is Zorro-II required only for FAX capability?

Ah, no! The Phone portion with not fully work without the Zorro-II memory
either so it sound as though the memory is probably ok.
Yes, the salesman was correct and the SupraRAM should do he job. It would
appear that you have something else wrong. Do you have the version 2.0
software for that setup? (That is, the PhonePak version 2.0 software)

Two suggestions I would recommend. Attempt to send the fax to another fax
system (use the one provided to send to GVP if you like 215-337-9922) and see
if the results are the same. The other would be to attempt to send a different
fax, perhaps printed from a program and see what results this has.

Dear Mr. Lininger,
Do you know the brand and model of the fax machine to which you cannot
connect? It may be a fax machine that is not cpmatible with PhonePak. Also,
have you tried sending the fax to any other fax machine? If not, please try to
send that fax (or ANY fax that you create) to GVP, attention to Technical
Services. If the fax is received at GVP, then the other fax is incompatible.
If not, then there is some other problem, either in software or in the PhonePak
board. Please try connecting with GVP's fax and then call GVP with the
results.
