#Help w/QB and HD Floppy

I am having trouble with Quarterback. I thought when I bought it that it
has the capability of using HD floppy drives but I have been unable to get
it to recognize mine. I have one of the new external drives on DF1:.

try having a HD disk in the drive prior to starting QB. Sometimes that
works.

Nope that didn't work… I tried to back something up and it only put
about 1,500k on that disk. I am using compression so it obviosly thinks
that it is still a low density situation.
ANYONE: Any further help on this would be greatly appreciated!

I need a little more info on your setup. What version of the OS are you using,
What type of computer do you have etc. It is easy to determine what size media
Quarterback thinks that it is using by the number of disks required to do the
backup. If you have 3.52 megs selected to backup and it tells you you need 4
disks to do the backup then it thinks you are using 880 K drives.
What type of drive are you using? Does it require any external software to
work?

I have thrown the same problem at Central Coast without a solution as
yet. My system is a 2000 with two internal Commodore 4000 type HD
floppy drives, 7 megs of memory. At times it fails to recognise one
or both of the disks that have been installed, sometimes it recogized
them at the start and at some point QB then starts telling me that I
have put bad disks in the drive. I have then replaced those with
brand new "virgin" disks which it may or may n not accept. Later in
the same process QB may accept disks it has previously rejected. I
formerly religiously B/U'd my system. Due to the aggravation, I have
stopped. Maybe the next revision will work properly with HD
floppies? Good Luck! ED R.
Thanks, Ed. I haven't had too many problems since I gave Central
Coast a call. Hopefully it will continue to work well in the
future! Here's to a new revision!
Jonathan, I must add here I am 1/2 Schmidt (maternal grandparents) they both
immigrated here around the turn of the century from Germany also my paternal
grandfather earlier. So, Ich bin drei viertel Deutsch. Great Uncle Christopher
was father to the inventor of the Jeep Delmar (Barney) Roos.

I have a simliar set-up an A-2000: 2 internal HD floppy drives; 10
megs of ram. I use Quarterback to back up my Maxtor 345 Drive. Yes,
there is a trick — a "Work Around" I learned from "Central Coast"
(11/30/93) and it really works.
1. You must insert a HD floppy into each drive before starting QB.
2. NEVER, NEVER remove a disk until both disks are completly finished.
3. After removing both disks you MUST NOT insert the disk QB wants next.
You insert the OTHER disk FIRST and let it settle in and allow QB to
realize it is there (3 seconds or so). Then you may insert the disk
QB needs to continue.
EXAMPLE:
Insert Disk #1 in DF0: and Disk #2 in DF1: then start QB. When QB has
completed both #1 and #2 then and only then take out the disks. QB is
asking you in a popup requester to insert #3 in DF0: NO! NO! NO! Instead
INSERT #4 in DF1: and allow it to settle (about 3 seconds or so). Next,
insert #3 in DF0: and QB FUNCTIONS FLAWLESSLY :^)
If you do NOT wait 3 or so seconds before inserting the other disk QB will
respond by telling you that you have inserted a bad disk. If this happens
you must take out the disks and do NOT give QB the Disk it wants next but
the following one and wait 3 or so seconds and then you re-insert the same
disk that QB said was bad and QB will accept it and continue the backup.
This way QB will backup 2 HD floppies at a time.
Yes they should fix Quarterback to work properly with HD Floppies, but
until then the "Work Around" works for me. I hope it does for you.
