#MegAChip compatibility?
3 messages in this thread
I have a MegAChip 2000/500, but I haven't installed it yet. A have a few
questions. Is it compatible with the Supra Power PC board. This is a board
that goes in the A501 slot and normally gives the Amiga 500 K of extra memory,
although there is a total of 1 MB on it somewhere.
I'm also wondering if there is any way to use a Spirit SIN 500-2 board with
the MagAChip. It would appear that they both take the same physical postion
unless there was some way to raise the Spirit board (maybe add another socket
under the 68000), but that would probably interfere with the keyboard or top
case.
Thanks for any help anyone can give with these questions.

Neil,
If the Supra board is a standard 512K memory expansion card, then the
MegAChip will work. If the Supra attempts to add more than 512K, then it
will conflict with the MegAChip since most of those expansion products map
the additional RAM into the memory space reserved for the second meg of
CHIP RAM.
If I remember correctly, the Spirit board does get in the way of the
MegAChip, though if you left the shield off, (not recomended) you could
probably extend the Spirit board up to give the needed clearance.

Dean,
The Supra board *can* function as a standard 512K memory expansion and
that's how I am using it. The instructions say that *if* you only have 512K of
chip RAM, you can enable the extra 512K as a RAM disk. When I put this command
into my StartupSequence, it didn't work and I had to reboot with another disk
to remove it. The more I think about it, the more I think it will porbably
work. If not, I'll just have to switch back to A501 and sell off the Supra PC
board to someone else. I'll let you know next week how it comes out, for your
future reference.
Actually, I've been operating without the shield for about a year. I got
tired of taking it off and replacing it. It doesn't seem to affect RF
interference much either way. Anyway, I think I've decided I can put 1.5 MB of
the Spirit's memory into my SupraDrive HD case, so I don't think I'll try
replacing the Spirit meory expansion in the computer.
Thanks for your reply.
