For so me time, I've wanted to share with you the story of my affair with Animator. I first learned about Animator several years ago, when I read that it had been selected as one of the best products of the year. That's when I bought my first copy. You've probably seen the ad about Gorbachev:: "COULD ANIMATOR PRO HAVE SAVED HIM?" (e.g., CGW 5/92 pg.29). The ad states: "maybe things wouild have been different if he had presenmted his ideas with Animator Pro." Things have surely been different for me because of doing just that! At the the time my story takes place I worked at IBM in Endicott. Not long after I had bought Animator my sister got sick, and I had to rush to Austin. While in Austin, I learned that an IBM fellow, at IBM Austin, was putting together a task force. This was opportunity knocking! Working with an IBM fellow would mean virtually unlimited funds and independence from local management, i.e., Paradise! I visited him and offered my services in the areas of DP and Presentation Graphics. He asked why he should pick me. I said that I would tell him in 2 weeks and asked to borrow a copy of his last yearly report. I bought another copy of Animator, borrowed a laptop, and prepared my presentation while looking after my sister. The presentation included an animation that demonstrated the operation of a complicated connector described in the yearly report. That did it. I got the job! For most IBMers, the last 2-3 years have been very unpleasant. They were my best years. After my trip to Austin I returned to Endicott to do what I liked most, with complete independence from local management. I retired from IBM last July. At that time I was working (working?!) from home, had 4 PCs (in my bedroom!), a 23 inch monitor, color printer, etc. And, my phone rarely rang! When I retired, I returned the equipment, bought my own with the "retirement incentive" I received (1 year's salary), and continued animating: same place – same time. With luck, life will continue to be good. Too bad Gorbachev didn't try Animator!
