#1200 accelerators?

Does anyone have the ICD Viper 1230 accelerator for the 1200 or know
anything about it – is it good, bad, whatever? I'm about to get one, or
maybe something else, but no one I know has an accelerated 1200, so I
would _Really_ appreciate any advice anyone could give me.

I don't have the Viper, but the GVP 1230+ 40mhz, it was the only A1200
accelerator available when I bought my A1200, it has performed flawlesly.
My only regret is that it does not have SCSI capability or can be
upgraded, so using SCSI drives of any kind is out of the picture. The
Viper is upgradeable if I'm not mistaken, and I believe it is an option
with the Microbotics A1200 accelerator as well (but you better ask
first).
You also HAVE to get 32 bit fast ram, otherwise you won't notice much of a
speed increase. I started with 4 megs in mine and quickly realized I
needed more and added another 4 meg simm. The GVP has 2 simm slots, I'm
not sure but the viper and/or microbotics units might only have one simm
slot so you would have to consider the added expense of an 8 meg simm, or
facing the prospect of having to get rid of a 4 meg simm if you need more
ram later.

The new GVP 1230+ Series II controller has a little socket on it for
adding the new A1291 SCSI controller.
The Viper has never shipped…
I didn't know they added scsi exspansion capability to the GVP 1230+, I
wonder if they have a trade-in/upgrade option for current
owners….probably not, but it might be worth a call.

GVP announced/launched the new A1230-Turbo+ Performance Series II at the
Pasadena WOC in September, but shipping has been outside the U.S. to date.
Shipping, as well as upgrade policies, should begin in January 1994. Full
Product Information Literature and a copy of the Press Release can be obtained
by calling GVP's Customer Service at (215) 354-9495.
Unless you know something I don't, the Viper has yet to see production.
It was announced last May and never appeared. It promised to be the
ideal board, but ICD ran into some kind of problem (one source said the
problems were financial, not technical.)
