Does anyone know of the existence of a database of National Geographics
magazine articles covering the past 4 years ? I thought I ran across one once
here on Compuserve, and am trying to avoid building one from scratch.

I do not, but there are several databases accessible through CIS or other
services. It may be possible to download the info you want, and import
it into a db of your choosing.
