I have the ADPro and would like to use it to make 16-color .BMP files to use as wallpaper for Windows 3.1. I have used ADPro to save the file as a 16-color BMP and it works. I can view a converted picture using CSHOW on an IBM and it looks like it should. However, when I use the picture as wallpaper for Windows, or load it in PaintBrush, the colors do not match what I expect. I think it has to do with the palette used by Windows, but do not know how to change it to match my picture, or use this palette to lock the palette used by ADPro so the render result will look better in Windows. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Note: I have also used 256-color BMPs which look great, but slow down the pokey Windows too much for my tastes.

Steve, Sounds like you need to go into your Windows Setup function and change to a video driver using at least 256 colors. Even though your image is only 16, apparently the 16 that Windows is using at the moment are not the correct 16 to match your image. Jerry

Have no idea if this will work or not, but can you load a 16 color .BMP file from windows into ADPro and then lock the palette. Then any pictures you convert will use the standard EGA 16 color palette. I have not tried it, just sounds like it might help. -Mike 8-{D} Unlimited Potential Kansas City, KS

This is the best advice I would give – Steve's problem is that the 16 colors ADPro is picking are tuned to make the picture look its best, and are not the 16 default colors Windows is expecting. Windows attempts to match the colors the best it can making the picture look ok – but different from its original colors. To make them match exactly, tell ADPro to render using the same colors Windows is expecting. This can be done as Mike Reed suggests by loading a known good BMP file into ADPro, locking the palette, (you might even save this palette in an IFF file so you won't need to load an entire BMP image again – saving from the palette window tells adpro to save a palette in an iff file with no actual picture in it making it very small and fast), then loading the new image, rendering, and save.
