#VIPER and 3DS RELEASE 3
14 messages in this thread
I recently install AUTODESK 3D studio release 3. It install itself with 640×480
256color Vesa driver. I'm using VIPER VLB video card with 2 mB memory. How I
can switch to hi color mode and what additional drivers are needed. Thank you

Go out to DOS and at the 3DS3 directory prompt type> 3ds vibcfg and choose the
right card from the list. Use 800x600x256 for the display and 640x480x16.7M for
the others(general rule-of-thumb settings).

Thank you for your help with configuration.
I'm new in autodesk 3D studio. May be I'm doing something really stupid each
time I try rendering animation, it show me in the midle of rendering "INVALID
NORMAL ARRAY" If I change some lights I'm able to create still rendering. But
if I go to keyframer and rotate object in final frame, (all in the middle
should be done automatically) it show me the same message. Even when I try
render simple #3DS 50% chance to get this message. I'm using 3DS STUDIO VER #
486dx2-66 Viper VLB BTW Can you recommend me any book where I can learn about
some basic and adv. tech to use 3DS. I try look at local bookstore, but thay do
not have any book about 3DS studio. Thank you -Ernest Morgenshtern

The best bet would be to reinstall 3DS3, Invalid normal array is sometimes
caused by a corrupt 3ds.exe file, I believe.
I know of two books that will be on the market VERY soon. One by Nancy Fulton,
the other by Steven Elliott, as well as a series of tutorial available now by
Michele Bousquet. They are all active on the forum and will be able to give you
ordering information. All three books will present 3DS in different ways with
very little overlap of subject matter.

Hey Earnest,
I'm running the VLB as well and it's a snap. Go to the DOS prompt, type 3ds
vibcfg.
After a sceen or two you get to the setup. Choose VIBRANT drivers for each of
the MAIN, MATERIAL and RENDER display. Depending on how high you want you res,
choose the appropriate P9000 driver (same as the VLB). Then ok and you are set!
Good luck! James
Thank you for your help with configuration. But I still experience some problem

Ernest:
The "INVALID NORMAL ARRAY" error means that your data structures have become
unstable, which is usually caused by a glitch in the executable. Check for
viruses, and then just re-load from your original disks and it will be fine
again. I promise!
There are a few books on 3DS available, but first I would recommend doing all
the tutorials in the manuals. Have you tried these yet?

Thank you for your reply. As you have advise me I reinstall 3DS from original
disk and problem still happened. I'm using QEMM386 ver 7.03 memory manager and
MSDOS DBLSPACE. Is it possible that one of this programs or something else
cause this problem?. Thank you -Ernest Morgenshtern 23-Dec-93 at 8:08p

I had the exact same problem as you describe when using 3D Studio release 2 and
Stacker 3.0. Stacker had corrupted a bunch of files in my hard disk including
3DS.EXE. When I reinstalled from the floppies, the new 3DS.EXE would just
replace the old one but Stacker would corrupt it again, and again, and again. I
could not figure what the heck was going on. I was only able to figure this out
when I installed 3DS in a non compressed partition. When I compared both files,
a single byte was different. I traced the "write" function to find out who was
changing this byte and found a bad instruction in the Stacker code. This byte
happen to be on a (disk) sector boundary and stacker was getting messed up when
transferring from its internal buffers. I know this bug was fixed in Stacker
3.1. I gave up on stacker and bought a 1.2 gig drive. Cheaper when you consider
the headache…
Ernest,
>>MSDOS DBLSPACE
When you installed 3ds3 did you instruct the installation program to configure
the virtual memory (SWAP File) on the NON-COMPRESSED Drive (Usually K:)???
Give it a try
Chuck
Ernest:
Dump DoubleSpace! Or at least get 3D Studio to swap to a non-compressed
partition, and preferably keep the program there, also.
Try loading it there and see if it runs OK.

Hey Ernest,
To answer: I have never experienced the INVALID NORMAL ARRAY and so I don't
know how to fix it. There's lots of people on here that probably do know how,
so if they don't just step in, try posting a message with this as the subject.
As for book, there has been a couple mentioned on CIS in the last few weeks,
one called "3D Studio Applied" which I believe is being released very soon, if
it's not already out. Another is "Inside 3D Studio" which has been said to be
released in Feb. They both sound fantastic – I hope one of the local shops
decided to pick it up, but chances are we'll have to order from someone like
Greg Pyros.
