Hi, I am a new member to the forum. I and a Friend of mine, George Drakulic
collect and trade North Carolina mineralogical specimens. We have excel- lent
quality quartz, kyanite good for systematic collections, fossils from Aurora
(Pleistocene-Eocene marine fossils), garnets, amethyst, corundum, a small
quantity of Crabtree emeralds (Spruce Pine mining district), hyalite opal
(fluorescent), epidote with albite. We prefer to trade for European and
world-wide specimens to enlarge our collections. We could also sell outright.

Robert – and George, welcome to the Forum! We certainly welcome and appreciate
trading offers. In fact, there are several trading lists posted in the Library
see LIB 12. I personally do not have any trading material at the present.
I live in Washington state, but haven't yet collected at Spruce Ridge for fine
pyrite on quartz, or in Columbia basalts for rare zeolites. I tend to focus on
Eocene-Miocene fossils in the nearby area. Eocene and younger plant fossils
many gastropods from Oligocene to Miocene. So far no Pleistocene vertebrate
fossils in peat bogs or gravels.
We have an informal conference coming up January 9th and a practice session
just a few days before.
I am jealous of your collecting locale. North Carolina has amazing diversity.

One of your references for Wisconsin fossils mentioned Pleistocene vertebrate
fossils in gravels… what sort of collecting location does this imply? Your
reference mentioned Vilas county, an extreme northern county in WI, almost
Upper Michigan. This area is more mountainous than southern WI, which shows
much more effect of glaciation. I'm accustomed to glacial gravel mounds. How
might Pleistocene gravels be arranged in relation to other geological features?
I am most familiar with the pleistocene and more recent holocene gravels here
in Washington. Whether my experience is applicable to Wisconsin exposures is
problematic.
I have not found any vertebrate fossils in this state. With that disclaimer
made……
I keep a close watch on local roadcuts through glacial tills and gravels, and
occasionally traipse through local gravel pits looking for teeth and heavier
bones. There have been local reports of mastodon and horse teeth being found
but no clearcut hotspot. Given the published reports, I presume that the
productive gravels in WI are stream deposits vs glacial till. Since most bone
beds represent herd drownings with subsequent deposition of bones on sand or
gravel beds. The remains are rarely articulated, rather existing as a
hodgepodge of bones from many separate individuals.
Consider the mechanics of hydraulic transport of bones as similar to the
tranport of gemstones and heavy metals. They are found where stream velocities
slow enough to drop out the heavier materials while still carrying the lighter
sands and silts. With this in mind, one has to survey and prospect for bones
in gravel much in the same manner as prospecting for gold. Look for gravel
benches above dry stream beds (or wet ones as well). Watch the deposits for
crossbedding ( a potential sign of gravel or sand bars from the past ).
As for the Vilas location, if in mountainous terrain, look for exposures above
the floor of streams or creeks. They started at a higher elevation than they
are today. Watch the scree slopes of high clay or sandy gravel cliffs or
slopes for weathered out material. If any is found (watch for woody or plant
materials too), examine closer upslope, upvalley.
If you find anything, I hope it was because of these wonderful hints.

Although it's very flat around here, there have been finds of giant beaver
bones, mastodon bones and teeth in this county, in bogs and farmer's fields.
Eventually, I'll track down the field workers at the university who retrieved
large beaver bone from a farm about six miles from here.

I am particularly interested in fluorescent minerals – I wonder if you have
checked your specimens with UV? My trading list is LISTDM.TXT in the forum
library – I figure to upload a slightly updated version in the next few days.

George has a major collection of radioactive material in. For fluorescent
material, he has Torbernite from Spruce Pine. There is also Autunite in
crystal plate, Meta Torbernite (green crystals on feldspar), gummite, and so
forth. We can also get Hyalite opal from the same locality; I may have a piece
in my closet. THe Hyalite and torbernite glows bright green.
I go to Franklin, NJ. I used to live in NJ and worked out some of my ill
feelings from living around NYC on the flourescent mineral dumps. Buck- wheat
dump is maintained by the mineral museum and the local Kiwanis Club. I
understand rockhounds have access to the Sterling mine. I have several boxes
of material in storage in NJ.

Welcome to the forum. I am also a very amateur mineral collector. I live in
Haddon Heights, New Jersey, which is 1) close to Edmund's scientific factory
store, and 2) close to some of the classic mineral localities in Southeastern
Pennsylvania (French Creek pyrite, Phoenixville pyromorphite, etc.). My sons
and I occasionally go up to Franklin, NJ, to collect fluorescent specimens, or
to Paterson or Millington, NJ, to collect zeolites, apophyllites, prehnites,
datolites, etc. In the summer, we have vacationed in the Bancroft area,
where we collect radioactives and REE minerals.
As you can see, my collecting is diverse. I'm not terribly computer
literate, but some of the correspondents here have been helping me into the
next century. I have collected in Amelia and once in NC, but lacked enough
time to bag anything exciting. I'd be interested in seeing you post your
trading list. Let me know whether I have hit on any species of interest to you
and George Drakulic.
