After reading articles in the UK magazines on different modems, it has left me puzzled as to which modem to replace my 2400 with, as they all seem to have there own failings. Can any one could give me a report on the Supra 14400, US Robotics 14400 and especialy the ZyXel 14400, as there is nothing that beats listening to those that have used em! Can anyone give me a contact in the UK for ZyXel modems ? Reports from the UK even better. thanx Graeme.

I use a USR Dual standard 16.8K modem. I actually don't get to use the HST mode too often, and so a USR Courrier 14.4K modem would have been a better choice. The modem itself works greats, and is upgradable to 28.8K (V.FAST) when it will be released (sometime in 94). That's another plus for the modem, since you won't have to throw it away to get higher speeds in the future. I'm very satisfied with USR, and so I don't mind having spent a little more than the other models. As for a SUPRA, I used one once last year for two weeks from London. I didn't like the quality of the line that I was getting when calling to the USA from London, compared to other EC countries. I don't know if the phone connections are worst from London, than from other places, but I sure didn't have any good connections. BUt since I didn't have the USR modem there to compare, I really can't say that it was the modems fault.

Thanks for the report Marc, Not wishing to spend more than #300, the USR 14400 Sportster seems to be a good bet. I hope to get further reports and be able to compile the results to enable me to make my mind up. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR ! Graeme.

Graeme, given a choice between the Supra and thhee US Robotics, I'd have to go with the USR, unless you have very clean lines. I've had a continuing problem with low quality lines since I moved from San Diego, and the Supra can't seem to hack it while the USR doesn't bat an eyelash at it. Brian bjbart@watserv.ucr.edu

Many thanks Brian, this is one of the faults that was mentioned in the reports on the Supra that was featured in our magazine. I dont seem to suffer from line noise but there is a first time for everything, so I think I will be looking towards a Sportster. Thanx again, MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR Graeme.

Graeme, I recently bought a USRobotics Sportster 14400 Fax modem and have nothing but praise for this little beast. It's quick neat and well priced. Phone Brian Fowler Computing on Exeter 0392 499755 for a good deal. Pete From Dorset in Englands westcountry
