I recently purchased a used Amiga 2000 (rev 6 MotherBoard),
Toaster 2000, 2.0 s/w,
GVP A2000 HC+8 Series II, rev II, RAM/HardCard w/6MB 80ns RAM,
52MBHD on card,
Kitchen Sync Dual channel TBC,
1084S RGB Monitor,
I purchased separately a GVP A2000 030 COMBO REV 3 25 MHZ accelerator, and a
new Quantum Empire 1080S drive.
!. I installed the accel. with no problems. System functional.
2. I tried adding the new Quantum drive, and ran FaastPrep. I was successful in
getting the new drive bootable, but I didn't do something right with FaastPrep
to reprep it (I wanted to start from "scratch" so to speak and reinstall the
Toaster software, and any other software I purchase… get rid of all the old
stuff on the HD, so to speak). Was this a mistake, to unprep the old, original
Boot Drive? I then couldn't get FaastPrep (Auto) to Prep the old drive… I
must be doing something wrong, because I ended up erasing the FaastPrep floppy
(and bad boy am i — i didn't make a floppy backup so now I have to try to get
a replacement disk).
3. Now when I boot off the new HD, WB aks me if I want to do keymap setup every
time. (Excuse me, but unfortunately the system I purchased included no
documentation except the Toaster, so my WB skills are weak and no manual to
refer to. Here in NW Iowa, the nearest Amiga Users Group I've been able to find
is 150+ miles away in Omaha; I did find a 4000 in a TV station in Sioux City,
but there's a limit to what I feel right asking them (and it's not a 2000)).
4. When I try to install the Toaster Software off the original Program
Diskettes, I doubleclick Install, and the system seems to start processing,
then appears to reboot the system, and the screen displays "Software failure:
Error 8000 000B Task: 01052F90" So I can't get the Toaster installed either.
Qusetions:
1. Any advice on the above situation? Any will be greatly appreciated!
2. How can I get documentation on GVP products? Can I download text files
anywhere, or FAXBACK documents, or order docs? Specifically, for the 2 above
named GVP Products (and I have NO Amiga 2000 or Workbench docs either).
3. Will it harm anything to operate the system with the older Quantum LPS52 HD
not prepped? I hear a continuous sound, like a hard-drive running… could that
be that drive looking for system files or something? I'm pretty sure I've got
it all SCSI'd correctly: Cable originates on the accel, loops to the 52MB, on
to the Empire 1080; termination removed from the 52MB at address 4; termination
in place on 1080MB at address 3; no other SCSI drives, although is the HC+8 a
possible conflict?
Come to think of it, I didn't try it since these problems last night,
but when I doubleclick the GVP icon on FaastPrep disk (which is now erased) the
system responds "GVPSCSI Program failed (error #87000004".
4. There is no memory on the accel. What exactly do I need, and where do i
get/how do I install?
5. The system didn't include an RGB monitor cable, so I'm running in mono.
Would you have the pin-to-pin connections for the DB25 monitor connection from
the Amiga to the DB9 on the 1084? I'm a PC-comp. techie, capable of wiring this
from an unused EGA extension cable, but I need to know what pins go where.
Again, no docs in NW Iowa to give me any help.
Thank you for helping save me from my two weeks of frustration! The lack of
documentation is part of what made my system a reasonable price that I could
afford, but now I'm feeling the effects of it.

You could leave a message in the GVP section of the AmigaVendor Forum
regarding a replacement disk and manual.. I have occasionally bought
"preowned" software, and the publishers accepted a letter from the
original owner as suitable ID to transfer the product to me and send me
updated material. If all else fails, send me an e-mail with your address
I can send you a back-up of the faaastprep disk — it only works with GVP
hardware. I have the last release which worked with the older series I
SCSI interface.
And I have a set of AmigaDOS docs at least for V2.5 since I just I
upgraded to 3.1 and haven't tossed them yet.
I think after you set your partitions, etc. with faaastPrep, you have to
do a format with AmigaDOS to create a usable drive. This is done from the
workbench. Where and whether to place the terminations on the SCSI
devices is a never ending debate. Also each device needs a unique ID
which as you may know is set with jumpers on the drive. SCSImounter is a
shareware tool which can help you check IDs, find out if you have a
corrupt RDB, etc. It should be in a library here or in the AmigaUser
Forum.
Try placing the terminations on the last physical device and leave them
off any intermediate devices (You should get a lot of advice on this
topic).
The keymap question allows you to set USA2 or an alternative map of the
keyboard when you first install the operating system. If you make the
wrong choice, the key pad may not be recognized… been a while since I
played with the key map. There is a tool in the workbench files which
shows what keys are operational for a given map (SYS:Tools/Keyshow). A
number of key maps are stored in the SYS:DEVS/keymap drawer. USA2 is the
one I use.
REDMOND cables is a source for a monitor cable.. and there is an adapter
which converts DB25 to DB9 as well. someone will likely give you an
address. I don't have it handy, but could look it up for you.

Thanks, Robert! Your advice is very helpful! I wasn't aware of debate over
SCSI termination… all I've read is be sure only the last device is
terminated, but not the ones along the chain (which follows video loop-thru
conventions, which I saw as cross application, in my ?ignorance?)
Oh, would the AmigaDOS docs be such a blessing! I'm still not even
understanding whether AmigaDOS and Workbench are actually one in the same, or
whether it's like the OS vs. Program Manager or something in the ibm-world
(forgive me for the comparison, but I'm "comfortable" with the ibm-comp. pc).
The guy who sold me the accel. 3 weeks ago did finally find his docs for that,
which he says he's sending, with the replacement FaastPrep disk. Hopefully
he'll carry through with that in a timely manner. Here I was hoping I could use
the Toaster for switching a live Christmas Concert taping this Sunday. But
without Faastprep (I think that's what I need), I keep getting the "software
failure" message when I try to reinstall the Toaster software. Oh, the joys of
learning a new computer system!
If you're willing to send me your old DOS manual (and are there DOS diskettes,
or is that Workbench? (I'm so confused and feel so stupid asking these silly
questions)).

Hi Barry.. I will send you the manuals. I have the old disks too. I
upgraded a 2000 from V1.3 to V2.05 to V2.5. I think the ROM for 2.05
works with V2.5.
You can send me a cheque for postage when you get the package. I keep a
US $ account for my store so a cheque is no problem up here. Will try to
get them in the mail in the morning for you.
