Steve, I was considering uploading a FLC I created and I remembered reading a message in this forum sometime back that mentioned the Hash library was full. Is this true ? Should I try your BBS instead ? Chris D.

Chris, One night I got that message. It appeared to be a temporary problem. Michael S. Flynn

>>One night I got that message. It appeared to be a temporary problem. Michael, Christopher Hoffman's message suggests that it may not be so temporary. While I have your attention, how is life in the Star Wars universe ? Do you only work for the Empire or do you also work for the beleaguered Rebel Alliance ? Chris, I plan on creating as many models as reasonably possible. X-wing and Y-wing are next on the list. I just finished the TIE/In today. Check the SF Multimedia forum in a few days for a .JPG image, and the project files for both the TIE and TIE/In. The reason I started with the TIEs was because a lot of artists seem to create these, probably because they seem very simple. I am detail-oriented and it bugs me to see some of the images and models that people upload that could be much better if they spent more time. Michael S. Flynn

Michael, I downloaded TIE-IN.JPG yesterday. Good job. I compared your model to a picture of one of the TIE-IN models used in Return of the Jedi and was pleased to see how faithful your model was to the original. What method did you use to produce the grooves on the sphere in the middle ? Do you have any plans to model the walkers from ESB ? And how about Darth Vader or a Stormtrooper ? Again, Well done. Chris D.

Chris, Thanks for the compliment. It was a lot of work. The way I modeled the sphere was to create an arc that, when lathed, would leave the object flat at the front and back. Then, since there are 12 body segments and 12 grooves, I took the number of degrees (360) chose 2 for the grooves, and 28 for the segments. Since AM does not support a selection of degree of sweep while lathing, I instead used the Clone and Rotate funtions to make copies of the arc. The original arc was in Front view, with the flat areas set to be at the top and bottom. (When complete, the seg would be rotated 90 degrees in the X axis in CHARACTER). The seg was centered top and bottom in the Y axis, and all points were Z=0. Then I cloned it, rotating it 7 degrees in the Y axis, cloned that 7 degrees, and then cloned the two clones and rotated them -21. I now had five arcs with 7 degrees of space between each; 7×4=28. Then I connected all the horizontal points in each arc to make a wedge shape that had an angle in the Y plane of 28 degrees. The grooves, or as I called them, dividers, used a modified arc similar to the original one, that was rotated 1 degree in Y, cloned and rotated -2 degrees. Then horizontal points were connected. It would take a few hours to explain how I created the segments and dividers that had to be flatened. One of the reasons that I am anxiously awaiting the Boolean funtion that are coming in the next version of AM is that I can recreate a much better hull in just a few minutes with Boolean funtions to replace what I have already done. I have uploaded the entire project files for the TIE and the TIE/In complete with all the materials and maps. It is a file called SW-PRJ'S.EXE. It is an SEA file using PKZip. Yes, eventually I intend to create a walker, and most of the other ships and vehicles. The walker might even be next. There is a file that was uploaded by someone who created a walker in Autocad and then rendered it. I don't really like to be overly critical of others work, but it irks me to see the lack of detail that he used, especially given that he has a $3,000 program at his disposal. My models have the detail because I personally think that it is important, and, as machines get cheaper and faster, detail will be a requirement. Michael S. Flynn

MIchael, Thanks for your careful sculpturing explanation. I always find it helpful to learn how others solve modeling challenges. BTW, your TIE-IN model looks better than the one used in the cut scenes in the game TIE FIGHTER. Perhaps you could earn a few extra dollars at Lucas Arts. Chris D.

Chris, You're welcome. One of the reasons I created the models was to try and get some work from LucasFilm/LucasArts. I am working a couple of .AVI files to send with the graphics. Michael S. Flynn

There is something wrong… I uploaded a zipped file (96k) a few days ago, and it still has not shown up in the library… Hmmmmm…. I didn't think the Pictures were THAT bad…<G>! Christopher Hoffman

Christopher, Hopefully one of the sysops around here will tell us what is going on. BTW, what is in your ZIP upload, a still image, FLI, FLC, etc… ? Chris D.

It is a zipped file containing 3 .TGA's of a basic Star-Trek type ship I designed. It's a static model that I'm building to take me through all the modules of A:M to help me learn the program… Someday it may even be an animation! <G> Christopher Hoffman

The file library is NOT full, you should be able to upload ok…. Sometimes it take several days for files to appear… be patient <g> Steve, Hash Inc.

Hmmmm… It's been over a week… maybe I'll try it again… Christopher Hoffman

Chris, I don't have any control over the file area unfortunately… I don't even get to see em until you can see them released…. one thought, make sure you choose the Hash Inc library when uploading because sometimes the default is a screwy library… Steve, Hash Inc.

Looks like the Ship views got there after all… <G> It took about 2 1/2 weeks for them to appear on the board though… Maybe the sysop can help with this problem….? Anyway, the ship views are very basic, I just have a few materials pasted on and the basic ship colors… Check them out, tell me what you think… Christopher Hoffman P.S. I bought PaintBrush 5+ to hopefully help with image maps and such… Now all I need is a good shareware converter for the decals…. Hmmmmm…
