Were you aware that there are already PC boards out there with Alpha processors
on them? Not vaporware MIPS 10K. And VME, too.
Yes….as a matter of fact, we produce some cards with coprocessors. YARC also
makes a PowerPC multi-processor card. The hardware is the easy part!! The
idea is to get a chip optimized for graphics processing and support the
rendering engine from Autodesk. SGI is in the processing of porting the engine
the their platform (ie: the MIPS processor). Hence the interest. Don't
reinvent the wheel….just massage it (write support code, etc) a little to be
useful. We have many years and many resources dedicated to just that in other
areas already. (Mainly ground station support for NASA and other agencies using
satellite command control and telemetry)
Again, thanks for the input…I need all the opinions I can get at this EARLY
stage.
