Hello,
Could I please get some advice? My son has an Amiga 2000 and I am trying to
get him an (inexpensive) grayscale scanner and an HP DeskJet C for Christmas. I
am an IBM-kinda-guy myself and know little about the Amiga, so I am trying to
get some info to help Greg and I figure out what to do. Two questions:
1. Does the HP DeskJet 540C work with the Amiga, what do we have to do
to get an Amiga driver for it…etc.
2. We are talking to a local store which has an old Dest grayscale
scanner (I don't have the model number) which they think will work with the
Amiga…anybody ever try this kinda combo? Any comment on a Dest Scanner?

I'm not Greg, but maybe I can answer too?
1. Yes, there are several drivers available for the DJ540 from Commodore
(Workbench), PD (see CIS here) and commercial (SuperDJ and Studio). So
far, I think you get what you pay for. Studio is the most expensive
package as it does not include a "normal" driver 😉 and PD/Commodore do
offer several solutions with decent quality/problems speed. So give the
PD/Commodore driver a try (ask for the normal Deskjet driver wich suits
the b/w DJ540, and in case you got the color option, ask for the Deskjet
500C driver) and if you think you need more, go for the commercial.
2. Dest scanner? Never heard of the scanner nor software.

Thanks for your response on the DJ540 driver options. As for scanners, do you
have a recommendation for a grayscale scanner? Greg is my son, for whom I am
gathering this information. As we have some limits to our current ability to
invest in this equipment, it seems a basic grayscale is the best place to start
until Greg has had time to master the process, etc. However, I would be
interested in any comments you had on the topic.

Migraph, out of seattle has several scanners, both hand and flat-bed,
b/w-gray and color. I have had ok results w/ their product, a hand
scanner and some scanning software, but it was not pro-level stuff. If he
is just learning about scanning it should be ok, and even for newsletters
it's really good enough. For pro-level results or big scans you gotta
move upto a flat-bed scanner.

Here are my opinions on your questions, take them for what they are
worth and how much you spent for them <grin>!
The HP DeskJet 540C should be a no-brainer — it will work just fine IF
you have a proper printer driver. When I was helping a friend setup a HP
550C, we scoured the earth looking for a printer driver in the "public
domain/freely distributable" category. We actually found one, but it's
output was less than desireable. I'm sure there are much better "public
domain/freely distributable" printer drivers now-a-days, but the real
answer is to purchase one of the third party printer drivers which will
make your DeskJET sing! One that gets a lot of good press in these forums
is the "Studio" package distributed by Noahji's Inc (1-303-499-1975). I
would call them and ask how well the HP 540C is supported and how
big/little of a machine you must have to use the software effectively!
Now for the scanner — timing is everything! I don't know specifically
about the "Dest" scanner, but much like printers, the problem is going to
be finding either a stand-alone driver or more conventionally, a software
package that will drive the scanner directly. I personally do not know of
any solutions for the "Dest" scanner (of course that doesn't mean anything
because I haven't really tried to look <grin>). I do know that your life
will be a lot better if you purchase a bundled package. Interestingly
enough, I just received a flyer from MiGraph (1-800-223-3729) which has
some very good deals for Amiga users looking for scanning capabilities
<ah, finally, the link to timing is everything!>. They have a "Super
Scanner Bundle" which includes hand scanner, Touch-Up software, and OCR
software for $149.00. If you want a color version (18-bit color depth) of
the same thing, they are offering a "ColorBurst" special at $299.00. I
would call them and check things out as well.

I totaly agree with Ed. Even though I don't know MiGraphs scanner, but
they are well known and it's most likely the cheapest solution you can
get.
Otherwise you might have a look at a greyscale HP Scanjet scanner. Surely
not cheap, but a very good value/price performance and you can use the
ASDG software with it.

Thanks very much for the info. Seems a consensus that Migraph is good place to
start for the scanner solution, as Matt and Wolf also commented on them.
I will also take your advice and follow-up on the driver issue for the HP.
