I have been off the forum a few days and I am just getting around to all my
mail. The IGES translator that is built into the AutoCAD program has been
around before the days of DXF file format. This DFX file format has now become
the standard and IGES is going away. I heard that Release 12 was the last
release that supports IGES. There is a third party software company that is
doing the conversion and is more up to date with the IGES standard I think it
is up to version 5.xxx now. Where AutoCAD was only on version 2.xxx I am not
even sure if it supported 3D entities. Do not quote me on this information I
have been away from AutCAD for a while now and this is the best I have to
offer.

Thanks. It sounds like I may not have to worry about Iges files. I am working
with a company to animate some golf club head designs and had been told that
some designs were available in Iges. Since I am creating new designs in 3D
Studio I probably will not need them. Do you know the best way to get
something like a golf club head modeled by laser or other means. Who offers
this service or are there any economical laser type input devices out on the
market??

It looks like you are working on the same line of projects that I am.
Currently I'm modeling golf grips for the company's '95 product line. With this
project I was able to do all the modeling within 3DS using the shaper and
Lofter' helix path. The IPAS skin sounds like the tool for you. As for IGES,
yes it a dying breed, you might want to keep an older version (versions up to
R12) of AutoCAD around in case you need to do any conversions to DXF for
importing into 3DS. There probably a few people up on this forum which offer a
3D scanning service, you might want to leave a message for them. I think you
can buy low end 3D scanners for under 3,000 but I don't remember there product
names.

I haven't been hanging around the forum much over the last few months but the
Skin IPAS seems to be pretty popular. I'll see if I can download a little info
on it. Have you ever tried to build a golf club head? What a headache!! I
would be very interested in purchasing a 3D scanner.
