I'd like to create an SA3D animation of letters flying around and arranging themselves into words. Does anyone know of any library of "letter" objects for SA3D. It doesn't matter what font they are, as long as they are readable.

SA3D ver 2.0 comes with some characters but they are not very detailed. Syndesis market Interfont will allows you to create your own 3D fonts. They are over in AmigaVendor senction 7. Failing that I have seen a package called 'Fancy Fonts' with three fonts for about $60. I have several fonts in various formats, but I'm afraid they are all copyright of their respective packages….

Anyone here a legal expert on fonts? I seem to remember recently reading about a court decision that upheld the premise that fonts, in and of themselves, are not protected by copyright.

Interesting question Steve. I think the whole question of copyright of Fonts and 3D objects a bit tough to define. For example, if I take a 3D object from the VideoScape release disk and run it through my convertor to Turbo Silver format, is it still copyright of Aegis?. The data files are totally different and the actual 3D data has been maniplulated during the conversion. I try and make sure that in my personal dealings with these items I dont upload any objects that are not offically PD. As an aside, my program XOBJ is termed 'ObjectWare'. The desire is to get people to donate more 3D objects to the public domain. Playing with ray-tracers is great fun even if you are not good at traditional art, but designing and implementing decent 3D objects still takes a lot of talent. It would be a lot more fun for the 3D novice to have lots of PD objects to play with before he/she enters into producing their own.

I think that objects converted from one format to another would be still retain the copyright, even though they are converted. Fonts, however, are another story. As far as I know, fonts can't be copyrighted, but the names of fonts are. There is one font distributer who claims to have a "compilation" copyright on his fonts, but I don't think that means anything at all, since fonts are involved. Merely wishful thinking on his part.

I'd really suggest getting InterFont from Syndesis. It's really a snap to make 3-D text with it. You can use your own InterFonts that you've created with the InterFont Designer program (included in the package), or use some of the fonts already on the disk. (I did three of the fonts on the release disk, so I'm a bit biased) 🙂 Once you've got the letters you'd like to use, you just bring up InterChange, the InterFont conversion module, and the Sculpt-3D module, and type in your text….voila! You've got the 3d Text object. You can extrude it, make italics, or bolded letters…No more dinking around with lining up your letters in the Sculpt editor. It's a snap! Go to AmigaVendor to Syndesis' section and talk to John Foust about it too. Steve PS Check out the Turbo Silver pics in the Syndesis library of AmigaVend…they'll blow you away!
