#3DS / Windows/ Acad 13
12 messages in this thread
Dear Adesk:
Have you given any thought to the possibility of bringing 3DStudio into the
Win/95 or Win/NT OS's, so it can join the other Adesk products already in
Windows?
Those of us using AutoCad 12/13, AME, AutoVision..etc. in Windows now would
like the "orphan (bastard?<g>) child" to join the rest of the family. I went
to an all day presentation yesterday on AutoCad 13, and I was told of this
"better" communication being developed between your product family members, but
I(we) work in an all Windows environment EXCEPT for 3DStudio 4. If you can
render in Acad 13/AutoVision at these speeds why not 3DStudio?
Supposedly Win 95 and NT now have all these fancy 3D and Animation utils
"built-in" for developers to use. Also, I'd like to add that "Renderize Live"
and "AccuRender 2.0"(Which we also use) are in Windows with animation
capabilities. Isn't 3DStudio supposed to be the superior software? I want to
go to Win 95 and/or Win NT, but what do I do with 3DStudio when they effectly
"dump" DOS?

work in a DOS window under these two OS's?
Question (2): If so how bad will I downgrade it's performance in this
environment? ——————————————————

Hi Rod,
<< Question (1): Will it work in a DOS window under these two OS's? >>
I'm sorry but 3DS will not run under NT.

Hey Jonas,
<<< I'm sorry but 3DS will not run under NT. >>>
Why? Sorry, can't stop myself, even if I want to…… <smile>
Jonas,
Re: >>I'm sorry but 3DS will not run under NT.<<
Otay! How about Win/95? Heard anything about that environment? Win/95(Chicago)
will be the next logical step for us to make, or I should say we presently have
plans on going to it when it comes out.
Q: Will we be able to run 3DStudio with Win/95 loaded on a PC based on what you
presently know, or have been given liberty to say<g>, when it "replaces" DOS?
This is CRITICALLY important to me!

The currently shipping 3D Studio will not run under NT, and we haven't tested
it with Win/95 yet as that product is currently not shipping. Sorry, but
Autodesk does not discuss future releases of software or supported operating
systems.

Well, I guess this question is now "not applicable"

Otay! Then how about this question. Will 3DStudio run under the new
OS/2 (Warp) 3.0 upgrade for Windows in a DOS window? That OS is out
and on the street.
These questions are critical to me since I'm considering changing OS's
at our office, and the only real "problem" I have is 3DStudio.
Granted there are some unknows about AutoCad 13/Win too under OS/2
3.0, but I'm addressing those questions on the AutoCad Forum right
now.

And the answer is…….
……YES!
Download the following file for more info on settings people are using:

Brian,
Re: >>And the answer is…….

Great! I'll download the file right now. The file may answer this quetion, but
I'll ask it now anyway:
Is theperformance of 3DStudio under OS/2 equal in performance to a true DOS
session? Is there a performance/speed price to be paid for trying to run under
OS/2?
Now if only IBM upgrades to Win32 2.0 in OS/2 I'll be able to run Acad 13/WIN
in there too.

Sorry, Autodesk does not do benchmark testing. However people here on the forum
have stated that OS/2 is at least as fast, maybe a little faster than a DOS OS.
It really all depends on what else is loaded into the memory of your system.

There is about a 10% performance hit when rendering under os/2 vs. dos (i.e., a
300 second render in dos will take about 330 seconds in os/2).
LAM
Larry,
Thanks for the information.
Rod…
FYI: 3D Studio runs fine in an OS/2 DOS Session.
