#Convert IFF to GIF ?
9 messages in this thread
Would like to take some pictures – saved as IFF24 from our "Toaster"…. and
convert them to GIF files which can be played thru' a PC (MS-DOS).
Anything available ?
Regards, Hilary
Hilary,
There are absolutely a ton of products out there that will convert Amiga
IFF/Framestores to GIF format. One product that I really like is
available both for the Amiga and Windows based IBM compatibles. It's
called ImageMaster (WinImages Morph/FX for Windows) from Black Belt
Systems. It is an extremely powerful ImageProcessing package that retails
for $99!

Thanks for the suggestion John – re Imagemaster.
At the moment just want to experiment. Thus was wondering if there were any odd
programs in the Public Domain… or in Libraries such as the Amgiga, which I
could quickly download.
All the best, Hilary
Hilary,
Why GIF ?
I've had very good results using JPEG for floppy transfers from Amiga to
PC or Mac. Much less loss than GIF I would imagine.
Have you checked the Amiga Libs here ? Theres gotta be something.
I'll try for ya. :^)
Kinda Homey over here for Amigans.
I wonder if anyone REALLY uses PCs or Macs for doing desktop video ?????
Does Quicktime count ? :^)

Interesting reply John.
Outline of the problem/project is:-
1). Have shot a lot of industrial video for a client.
2), He would like to have some "stills" which he can use and see on his 486
PC.
3). He does not think that there is anything other than PC's on this earth…
and does NOT want to be told otherwise. Remember… he is the CLIENT and can
do, say, think NO WRONG!
All the best, Hilary
Hilary,
Unless I'm mistaken, GIF is limited to 256 colors. By going from 24 bit
accuracy to 8 bit accuracy you could lose a lot (depending on your source, of
course). JPEG is is a lossy compression format, but you can control the amount
of loss (or none at all).
Considering you going from Amiga, if you're going to have to do this more than
once, get a decent commercial program to do it … ImageMaster, ADPro, ImageFX
… they come immediately to mind.

Your advice sounds right Steve.
Will have to take a look to decide if such a service to clients will grow – and
whether it is prudent.
Thanks anyway – and best regards, Hilary
Hilary,
O.k., Maybe your client doesn't have true color display and thats why you
must convert to an 8-bit format like GIF. Makes sence.
Many clients need to be educated so they know what the right thing to ask
for is. Now if he's stubborn and set in his ways, thats his loss. This is
a highly Volital world we live in, and I plan on always atleast knowing
about the bleeding edge. Thats why we're here :^)
I mostly use ADPro for file conversions and ImageMaster for processing and
SFX. Lots of GREAT image processing s/w is available for the Amiga :^)
Lots of stuff in the Libs here also. You might want to try AmGIF V 2
(AmGIF.lzh) in the Amiga Arts/ Graphic Utilities Lib. Sounds like it will
do the trick for ya, IFF to GIF. Good Luck.

Thanks for the suggestion John.
I will not comment here upon my clients. First there is not enough room and
second, CIS does not like profane language.
Will certainly seek out the little utility you suggest from the Amiga Arts
library. At least it will give me (hopefully) some insight into the general
idea.
All the best, Hilary
